i am posting this just to keep things like Mr. M.R. did for the subject of PT Lubrication. i would like to start this thread for PT Engines replacement, suggestions, upgrades etc. only.

that does not mean that we should not have other specific to a pt model engine subjects started. my intend is to start this thread only for people to find answers , when they are not happy with their factory installed motor and are past their warranty time. or their engine "went south".

personally, i like diesel engines better and i just received this e-mail from Kanga mini loaders:
Kanga mini loader

my question to our engineer friends on this board is: do you guys think that would fit in a pt 400 series box? with some minor modifications? /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Engines

My own evaluation of the PT 422 engine upgrade to diesel is that by the time you solve all the problems, such as radiator placement, the need to have pumps off the front and the back of the engine, and the space limitations, you could buy a 1430. Once again, the PT pricing makes no sense.

My own quickie estimate brought the cost in between $4k and 5k for the diesel upgrade. I understand the advantages of a diesel, but it just was not worth that much to me. I felt the wheel motor limitations and cost would exceed the benifits.

In the end, I elected to upgrade my 422 to the 27 hp command engine. The engine is in my garage and I am resoving a fit up problem. I expect the engine will be in next weekend.

I do wish you luck in your search. It is clear you wish to have a diesel in your PT.

Re: Engines

Do the pumps have to be on opposite ends of the engine? I realize that they spin in opposite directions. Couldn't the smaller PTO pumps be placed above the drive pumps and driven with a serpentine belt arrangement?

Re: Engines

most large equip use an accessory drive, where the pumps sit beside each other.the latest thing is what pt uses two pumps in line,it takes less hp. and no gear box.
they covered the bases very well.

Re: Engines

Some of the diesel engines have an accessory drive on the side of the engine. These accessory outputs don't provide full engine power but are designed for power steering type pumps. That could be an option for one of the pumps.
The other option, but more $$$ is to purchase a full stack of 3 pumps, with this option you have a choice of sizing the pumps to a 2500, 3000, or 3600 rpm engine. Having a 3000 rpm diesel would be quieter and there's a larger selection to choose from. A 2500 rpm diesel may physically be too large.

I'm very curious as to how well the Briggs and Stratton (actually, Daihatsu) 3-cylinder diesel would fit into the PT 400 series... Here's a link

If this link doesn't work, go to www.briggsandstratton.com, then click on "Engines", "Products by brand", then in the "Vanguard" drop-down box, select "Vanguard Diesel". (Yes, I know, they make it nearly impossible to find! Go figure...)

Anyway, I've heard these are extremely small for their HP and torque...

Re: Engines

schultz,
the acc. drive i'm talking about is at the end of the crank shaft. like the cat loaders, and excavtors.
the hyd. pumps are driven off it.

Re: Engines

Charlie or Ed, what is the pump configuration on the 1845s? From the pictures on the web site, it looks like it’s a tight fit in the engine compartment.

Marrt:
It's at home and I'm at the office, but I think the crowded appearance is because of the plethora of hoses. There is room, for instance for the tilt seat solenoid, valve and plumbing, the draft control stuff, etc. I think there's actually some space around and behind the engine even with those in place, but not a lot. Thinking of putting the 45 Deutz in a 425?
Since I haven't had a hydraulic problem, I haven't even looked at pump configuration. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif The main variable volume pump, however, is in front of the engine - I bleed it to change filters. I assume it's driving directly off the engine crank. I'll try to remember to locate the secondary pump tonight.

Re: Engines

Look like the pumps bolt together in line on the 1845
as compared to the 425 where one is on the front and
one on the back - I'll tell you the 45hp is a big engine
and with the pumps takes up alot of space - I have not measured, but just by looking at it I can tell that there
is no way it would fit in a 425 -

I think the other diesels (kubota) are smaller - at least they look smaller -

I also think PT's design makes the rear of the tractor very long -

What are you thinking of doing?
