On my steepest incline that I normally traverse (25 degrees) I bog a bit at the top (300 feet long slope). As any normal person I want more power. I totally agree with Ken, the engine is enough, but the front end lift is really a shame. As my piston rod on my tilt has a slight bend in it, I plan to order all new cylinders for the front, upgrading them by a quarter or half inch...

Carl,

The PT type cylinders are hard to find, but Baileynet.com will make what you need. If you get on their mailing list, they send out a catalog of things they make and sell, plus some good deals. Just about anything hydraulics.

The ends on the PT cylinders are called top link ends, and they are mostly used as the top link on 3ph implements, because they have to take care of the implement side play, whereas a standard cylinder would break often if used in this situation. The other ends used are called cross tubes, rod end clevis, and forged base end clevis, and formed end clevis.

Thank you for the valuable info JJ. Learning a lot from you. Any chance you want to fly out to Washington and help pull hoses for a week or two ;-)

Hmmm... This is a bummer on the cylinder. Looks like I was thinking $500 for 3 cylinders (basing it on Surplus Center estimate). If I have to go custom... Bummer.

I wonder if I could just buy 1445 Cylinders (wonder how much PT would charge me for them).

I see in another forum, folks are talking about increasing horse power in diesels by adjusting the fuel pumps. Is anyone familiar with doing that and would it work with the Deutz engines used in PT's?

A number of diesel engine manufacturers have issued engines with varying HP ratings, with the amount of power being dependent only on the injection pump and its timing -- and perhaps the injectors. Perkins comes to mind.

You could probably find out if this is the case with Deutz by perusing their catalog.

Carl,

Do you want new cylinders for the extra lift power, or do the ones you have leak? You could install a rebuild kit. PT will probably sell you those cylinders for the 1445 if the dimensions are close. I would give a holler to a new 1445 owner, and ask for the dimensions.

I think I have a post from Ponytug in regards to his size. I am not home to compare measurements.

My cylinders do not leak. They work fine. But, my Tilt Cylinder is bent. I may have done it or it may have just come that way. It is subtle but has a tendancy to bind when tilted all the way down.

Carl

edit - His size of cylinder.... His size of hydraulic cylinder on his Power-Trac arm.. jeesh... Sorry Ponytug ;-)

I made my own. I went to rural king and bought clevis end cylinders. Then I bought an adjustable top link for 20 bucks. I sawed off the clevis ends of the cylinder and sawed off the top link ends from the top links and welded them together. $20.00 modification. I'm using three of them on my backhoe project.

JJ, are you speaking of all Power Tracs or just certain models? My PT-425 has only swivel ball end cylinders on it. As an aside, the manual top link on my Branson CUT doesn't even have top link ends. It has swivel ball ends.

While I haven't looked at the specific sizes, Surplus Center has swivel ball end cylinders.

Top link ends are swivel ball ends on one end and a knuckle and whatever on the other end.

They are not that common, must be a reason why.

Yes you could perhaps make your own by purchasing the swivel ball ends. They are around $12 to $15. I have not seen any swivel ball ends cylinders in the size that PT uses. I really don't see why they are necessary on the PT. The lift arms do not move a great deal in the side play.. What matters most is the open and closed lengths.

Carl, This cylinder might work for you if the closed length is about right. It does have 1 in pin holes. The pin holes on my cylinders are 3/4 in
