1bush I would like both a 4WD tractor and a PT but that is not in the budget. I am in Ashe Co NC.

Unless you are looking at plowing, disking, or other "field work" [as opposed to something the roto-tiller would manage] the PT should do everything a tractor can in the HP class you were looking at. Even then, for "field work" tasks, I'd want about twice that HP or better [of course, I might be a HP junkie compared to your needs /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif ]

With the orchard, I'd actually see the low profile PTs having the advantage, but some personal preference may come into play there. I'd say a trip to Tazewell would certainly give you some insight [and the 5% discount /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif ].

It'd take a QA plate and some welding skills, but I don't think something like the 4ft Bush-hog would be a very tough modification. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Of course, then it'd be too tempting to toss a couple cylinders on it as well! But then, you'd need an extra hydro line & valve or a reversing cylinder valve on your PTO [OK, that might be getting out of hand, but I figure if I keep teasing everyone, somebody else will actually try adding a reversing PTO valve /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif]

I am not sure how the bush hog blade would be modified to accept the PT quick connect plate.

All you would have to do is weld the quick attach plate to some bracing across the 3PT hitch. It would then work just like any other PT attachment. However, you would have to drive backwards, which isn't at all hard to do on a PT on small jobs. I am not sure how big of a bite you could take with a small PT though. Remember, the PT is geared for most chores. It has no high and low range, just a very happy compromise that works very well for the implements it is designed to use.

Thanks for the compliments on the web page. I need to put up some more current stuff as the page hasn't changed much in 4 years. After this weekend I will have some free time again and hope to put together an "Extreme Brush Hog Video" of me blazing trails through our very, very dense woods. I need to rig up a remote camera under the ROPS cabled to a video recorder(old camera) in a protected bag under the dashboard. I will need two hands for this video. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Two weekends ago I blazed a trail about 250 yards long through thick woods(trees every 6-10 feet) with briars, brambles, multiflora roses, 2-2.5" trees, and many large, fallen, rotting branches. Some were over 6 inches in diameter, but now have a 4' gap through them! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif If they had not been rotten, I wouldn't have mulched them. It is a satisfying feeling to be able to drive the PT forward through an area that the deer avoid because it is too thick and look behind you and see a 4' wide walking path down to the forest floor. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't think a PT would handle my scrape

I think a large PT would handle it just fine. They are brutes. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't think a PT in the 400 series would do a good job with a blade, just because the little PTs don't weigh very much. Once the blade bit in, the PT would spin the tires, or tip nose down, as in the PT pucker. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Chad,

I've got a reversing valve on my homebuilt PHD. Does that count?

/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Not quite sure if it counts, but it'd be the closest I've read; that has to be at least honorable mention! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Seriously, does the reverse on the PHD come in pretty handy?

The PHD and the tiller are the two things I thought would really utilize it, but haven't had any post holes or much tilling to do yet. Have used it on the power-rake just a bit, but been getting the most use from it's neutral position for switching attachments.

Moss I see your have a PT425.
When you say a large PT would handle a scrape blade are you thinking about the 425 or someting larger like a 1430/2430?

You can adapt any thing to almost any thing, but the fact is, that the PT lifting arms are not setup to do any serious pushing. The center of gravity of those lifting arms is about 3 feet off the ground. Any serious pushing machine will have a solid low mount. If you get too agressive with all that pushing, you will probably bent the tilt arms and pin, or damage the tilt cylinder. They make a small road grader that might work for the PT. This picture shows it mounted on a skid steer.
