Took my old 841 out to cut grass with a 6 ft bush hog for the first time. Great power, much faster than my little 4 ft Yanmar combo but the 3pt kept dropping. It will go from ok height to touching ground in about 45 seconds. It is a little slow to lift also - depends on RPM.
Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

since it's a positive displacement pump.. rpm will effect oil volume pumped.

now. are you saying you set it at a height withthe 3pt lever and it drops, but the lever doesn't move.. or does the lever slip down? or is it dropping after you turn it off?

you answers will affect the direction of the diagnosis and repair. in any case.. you are liekly looking at a 15$ top cover oring / gasket kit, , a couple gallons of utf fluid.. some heavy lifting, and a couple hours of fun.. :)

Thanks for the reply -
Lever(s) both are good - they don't move/slip. I set it to a height and it begins to drop right away - takes about 30 seconds to drop 3-4 inches while at reasonable RPM for mowing....

I'm not sure if it drops when I turn it off - I always lower implements just out of old habits.

If I remember from my early days riding on this tractor with my Grandpa, the first lever with three specific stops is for draft control, the second is the lower and raising of the implement.(?) I could not explain draft if my life depended on it - always thought it had something to do with keeping the plow depth consistent as the tractor moved up and down a bit...or am I way off base?

draft lever is the short one. it is either up or down.

if draft control is being used.. the lift handle is not a lift height handle, but is a draft sensing threshold setter. draft does not keep the implement at a set level.. it keeps it at an area based on your draft setting. if the dirt gets lighter.. less draft.. the implement will plunge.. if the dirt gets harder.. draft goes up, and the implement is lifted.

almost sounds like you ar ein constantr draft control.

the position control should hold the implement at the set height.. may bob a bit from a leak.. but should try to maintain a height. if you set the lever and the implement drops.. I'd be checking that draft control.

down is position control.. up is draft.

Thanks - I'm following you but am a bit confused. Where is the draft control lever you are talking about? I have two handles on the right side of my seat. The one that is closest to the seat I think has 3 positions. The outside handle is smooth sliding...... I'm out of town right now or else I'd send a picture.

I saw a couple other posts - is there another lever under the seat?
Thanks!

the lil short 3" handle is the draft lever. it's either up or down...

the position control handle is the one in the quadrant.

OK - got back in town and went out and took some photos and read the manual.....
I've got 3 levers - that's why I was a bit confused (still am a little..)
I see the position control lever in the quadrant/housing. Then I see the Constant draft control which is a small lever about 5 inches long directly under the seat. So I have another lever which you can see in the photos and it has 3 positions. I think it may be related to a rear hydraulic plugs. CIMG2536.JPGCIMG2535.JPGPowermaster Hydro2.jpg

well, had you mentioned you had a remote valve that would have taken 99% of the guess work out.

:)

yes.. that is the spool for a aux hyds port.

it's not directly related to the 3pt position and draft control, except it can intercept and limit oil flow / capacity from the 3pt, when in use.. etc..

Now that I know what it is.. I'll be sure to mention it!
When that valve is in the most forward position, the position control does nothing. In the middle and the back (towards the rear of the tractor) there is some movement.
Also - my fluid is towards the low mark on the dip stick - does it take universal fluid? I think I know where the fill plug is..

And, you mentioned the draft should be down for positon control and now the draft control is in the up position - how much force should it take to move it down? Can it be done with the tractor not running? I've pushed down on it with some emotion and it goes an inch or so but then not much - I don't want to force/break something.

Thanks for all the help. My grandfather bought this tractor on my birthday and I had it for a number of years after he retired but I sold to a friend when I moved for business to a city where I couldn't use it at all with the agreement that I would get it back. 18 years later I went and got it.. Now I'm trying to remember all this stuff....

Lastly, you've probably been asked before but is the Soundguy a hint to your profession (outside of tractors)? I've got some freinds in the area that are in the commercial sound business.

Thanks again.

utf fluid for the hyds.

as I said. when the remote is fore or aft.. it diverts oil away from the 3pt hitch. only when centerd will the 3pt have oil.

the draft lever moves springs and linkages.. can be moved any time.

as fromt he 1`st pic.. draft control lever is up / correct for position control. ( up = straight out to the side ).

soundguy? yes.. I'm a sound engineer at night, most holidays and weekends...

Topped off the fluids and went out to mow again, still leaking down - I guess we're back to the start.... Whats the $15 dollar solution with some heavy lifting?
Also - dripping some gas under the tank at the shutoff valve both bolts feel snug - is there a gasket or an o-ring in there somewhere?
Thanks

valve has an oring under it. could be leaking from oring.. packingnut/vlave or where fuel line enters.

15$ top cover kit has a handfull of orings and gaskets.

Hard to tell where the leak is - I'll start with the O-Ring - I see 2 bolts - I assume the tank is threaded? Will the valve come out and clear the valve cover or more work required...?
On the hydraulics - who would you suggest to get the top cover kit from?

Thanks again.

a cnh dealer will have the top cover kit for 10-15$.

on the fuel valve, it has 2 bolts holding it to the bottom of the tank. they are not thru holes.. so no selaer is needed.

remove the line after draining tank.. remove bolts.. rotate the tap a bit and pull down at a slight angle. you will notice the tap does not set directly over the valve cover.. but more towards the manifold side of it. take it out that direction..

OK - at the risk of sounding pretty stupid - is cnh dealer -a new holland dealer? Or something else - I use the one in Eustis -
Also - have you ever ordered from Dennis Carpenter in North Carolina? Looks pretty professional on the web site.
Thanks.
