The question I was adressing: Can dino oil be changed with synthetic oil before the 50 hr interval?
Sure, if the rings are seated-in to your satisfaction, then I wouldnt see a problem with it. So if the dealer says that the rings are seated-in at 35 hrs, then you are ready for synthetic. If you wanted to be scientific about it, you should have checked combustion chamber pressures at the beginning and then when the pressures stabilized you would know that the rings are seated. Most of us just watch the oil consumption and make conclusions on engine ring condition based on that, at least that is what I do. I fill the crankcase to exactly the dot on my dipstick and carefully monitor oil consumption. Diesels do burn a little oil and that is normal. Expect that the break period will show slightly more oil consumption. You get the idea...
But anyway, my question is why would anyone spend the money on syn oil during the breakin period? Wive's tail or not, it seems foolish to use syn oil during breakin period, if you dont have to, because it seems like a waste of money. Just use dino oil for 50 hrs, then switch to syn oil and stay with syn.
I also said, that I would personally wait 300-500 hrs before I switched to synthetic oil. The reason I said that is because I wanted to be able to compare my tractor performance, dino oils vs synthetic oil.
In other words, I wanted to be able to get a better feel for whether the syn oil was improving my performance.
Finally, I do think that syn oils are great, esp for cold weather starting and extreme high temps AND if you want extended drain intervals. If you use syn oil for other reasons it seems unlikely you could actually ever recover the costs. One poster mentioned he was a low hour/yr user, so it seems even more difficult to cost justify. Maybe someone could show me the numbers, if Im mistaken.
I use Mobil one in most of my engines, i.e. auto, and small engines, except my four wheeler (because it shares engine oil w/ clutch and honda says dont do it). I really like the syn oils, especially on air cooled engines, but Im just waiting a little while to use it on my tractor.
OBTW, I put 490 hrs on my CUT in two years. My dealer says that is more hrs than most CUT users. Maybe, I dont know...
Next oil change I plan on switching to Mobil Delvac 1. We'll see if I can tell a difference in cold weather starting and warmup times.
One last thought. I suggest using same BRAND of oil when switching from dino oil to synethic. For example, I use Mobil Delvac 1300 now, but will switch to Mobil Delvac 1. This way you get the same additive package. To the best of my knowledge, Amsoil doesnt supply a dino oil, so going to Amsoil right away, is probably a good idea. But then you dont go to the local Farm and Home store and get your Amsoil. I believe it is sold in a multi-level marketing way, like Amway maybe? I wonder, is it the same company?
Maybe someone could help me on that one. Ive never seen Amsoil on store shelves, to the best of my knowledge and that is why Im not a user of it. I do think the specs on Amsoil is better than Mobil, tho. So you'll have a good product, I you dont mind hunting for a Amsoil dealer...
