pre air filter?

hey all
I'm in need of some kind of air filter for my 2000. Our area is so dry that I am constantly sucking dirt. I have already had to replace the rings once and I'm sure it was from dirt. Does anyone have any idea's, I was thinking of some kind of sock that might fit over the intake extension.

Are you running the proper air filter, and not some "almost fits" supposed match-up? Too many people think the 6022 NAPA is a cross for the original when it is not; it is an "almost fits.". We have an aftermarket made to the same size specs as the original. In your conditions you may need to change it every 50 hours or so. Also make sure the neoprene seals on the bottom and top of your canister are good, as well as the neoprene sleeve at the base of the canister where it enters the intake manifold. If they are not, we have parts.

Funny you should mention the almost fits air filter. I replaced it with the OEM filter last week because after studying it a while I noticed that what came in my 2000 "almost fit"...a no-no for air filtration.

well I'm using a filter from Hoye. the dirt and dust is terrible. and yes I change that filter regular.

I'm confused. Are you saying the filter you are using is not working?

I am saying that it is not working well enough for me. I do change it on a regular basis. with that intake tube hanging so low it is just sucking up the dirt. it does not seem like I should need to change filters so quickley. but I have had to. and the conditions are extreme over hear in the south west.

I have a YM2000B, don't have that problem, or any real answer. Of course I am not in Az either. I would try taping one of those human drugstore pollution masks to the intake tube. If they work for people they should work for a tractor. Buy them by the pack and keep on board if they work.

Now that's a good idea about the mask. I work at a hospital so it won't be a problem getting mask.

70's V8 Jeeps (AMC) had a foam ring wrapped around the normal paper air filter. The instructions said something like take it off and blow it out daily in heavy dust conditions plus wash it frequently. I don't recall if it was oiled.

I think I would start with something like that.

First choice would be a foam ring designed for this. Second choice would be to make the ring out of home A/C return-air filter material.

I think you need the larger surface area of something that wraps around the paper filter, compared to putting a small filter over the end of that intake hose.

Another alternative would be to install a proper tractor pre-filter off some other model.

well that was what I was hoping for, some kind of pre filter. I just don't know where to start my search.

Unless I'm mistaken, if you get an OEM air filter it is reusuable. Just wash out with soap and water and let it dry. Wham, new air filter. More money up front but cheaper in the long run!!!

Sirs,
Did I read here to put facial surgical mask on the air element intake? Ya? What?
What you need to do is to fab up a pre-cleaner bowl for your air intake. The tractor I just bought - tested the oil, shoiws too much dirt, not good filtration- maybe sllers environment, maybe not. i'm wrtring up the fab tomorrow or wednesdsay and will share what i would do to helpt this situation, again, in my humbel opinion.

I don't think putting surgical masks on the element will help, personally. The tractor ain't a human afterall.

I bought my filter from hoye and it did not have a foam filter around it. I sure wish it did!

I've beensearching today for some ideas and found this. This person built an improvedfilter system, no-pre-cleen-filter-bowl. Nice ideaeither way.

I love the reusable filters like the K&Ns, and use them on my motorcycles and cars but be forewarned, they are not as effective a filter as stock. I would not use them in a dusty environment. A double filtration schema of sort would be more appropriate for a hard working tractor that stirs up all sort of dust.

KnN are oiled? I wuldn't recommend for diesel use. Diesel suck the oil righ off the filter and into the intake,etc. good cleen filtration is the way to go... change filter offen if dirty. p.s. i'm still considering ideas to fab up pre-cleaner bowl on older YANMAR (IThink GRAY YANMAR) tractors...

I put a clean ractive superflow SF400 on my YM1500 when I mow or till. It keeps a lot of junk from getting to the filter.

Mark, you could buy the YM240 that mike has for sale, it has the pre cleaner on it.
