Coons did? You got to have a good fence around your garden,,it will keep deer and rabbits and dogs and chickens and..... but unless you got some kind of razor wire electrified fence,,them coons will get in,,,,but,,you can deal with them as I said,,,,if you ain't at least gotta 6 ft fence made out of small woven/birbed wire around your vegitables,,than don't complain to much,,,now if deer is the problem,,you gotta either go electic or 8-9 ft probably both,,,,thingy

It's the coons doing the damage. I put the spot lights on and all I saw was eyes. My dogs were scared to go out there. Dogs would've been ambushed 30 to 1.. Needed to lay down a line of Napalm and wouldve had the corn and veggies cooked altogether with a lot coon meat.. I planted Hardwood cherry trees where the garden used to be. I go down to the local stand and buy my veggies now..

Man,coons eating vines and all,,,must not be as hungry around here,I'd declare war on them,,but I can shoot all night where I live,[if I wanted to],some can't carry on like that though,,,maybe electric on top of regular fence? They sell these battery operated motion detector things that lights flash and make a noise,,but that probably wouldn't work for long,on coons anyways,,,,thingy

Yea Dick, if you remember, the coons cleaned me out of sweetcorn last year too. I put up an electric fence but then we had a drought and didn't get anymore corn. We got 1 mess out of 23 rows of corn and had never had a problem before. I read that the electric fence will work but don't know for sure yet. There's tons of deer around here but they leave my garden alone. I've seen them grazing right by the garden but for some reason, they stay out.

Where I used to live, a bit further south, we knew when our sweet corn was ripe because the darn deer would eat it. I mean I would go through weeding the garden and notice that all the corn was looking good, the next day the dang deer would have taken a nice sample bite out of nearly every ear. They wouldn't eat any full ear, just a bit, and they would trample so much of it. That's how I know what deer tracks look like. I wonder if it will be that way up here? Hope not.

How deep do you guys till to plant carrots? The last time I tried carrots I got these stubby, 4" round, things that weren't 5" long. A neighbor guy told me that we didn't till deep enough. How deep is "enough" for carrots?

I'm wanting to put out a garden, but I want to be able to plant my peppers, corn, squash, and okra at the same time. I also don't really want to wrestle the tiller to different depths in different areas of the garden. You'd think that having grown up on a farm I'd know these things, but I wasn't involved in any of that part. I liked driving the tractors a lot, but that part honestly got rather boring after doing the same thing from sun up to sun down. Thanks for any answers. As I mentioned, I just want a relatively small garden this year that hopefully doesn't require constant weeding. Our neighbors are tomato nuts, so I don't need to plant any of those, they are always trying to give me baskets full of surplus.

Well, like I said,,one way I deal with coons is to pick all mine at once and freeze it or can it,,once they start they come back in force,,so,,thats how I get a years supply of corn every year,,,with out standing guard against coons all night,,,,

Carrots,,,,,we don't have much luck with carrots either, but I plant some every year and it has nothing to do with how deep I till,,,,the way I plant carrots is to make a hill with a hoe or rake,,I make my hills after making a farrow,,,than rake up dirt on both sides,so its deep enough, still don't have much luck,,somebody tild me potash helped,,tried that, and it didn't help me either,so if you figure it out,let me know..

How deep to till,,deeper the better but 6-8 inches is good for everthing,,tators I plant in rows deep, but 6-8 inches works,,,you make hills like I said for somethings anyways,,,,,,,thingy

i grew some pretty good carrots last summer. i planted pelleted seed directly into rotary tilled ground. i'm sure its not more than 6" deep. the ground had been worked with a turning plow the previous late fall and then disked. i have somewhat rocky soil. i did not add any soil amendments. they got very weedy though and i'm sure that decreased my yield. but the worse part was digging them up...especially when it was very hot out. but i sold them without any trouble at the farmers market. but i'm not growing them again because of the digging hassle.

Yeah,,we have growed them good sized,,but most of the time not,,tried different seed,,planted different times,,etc,,,,,know one thing,,many times I dug mine to soon,,,this year they stayed in ground till I think about thanksgiving, frost don't hurt tops to much,,but if you plant them to early the seed won't germinate right,,,wife canned 4 pts I think,,still tiny,,,,,I think maybe we been not thinning them out right,,,thats one of the many jobs I don't do,,and my wife is supposed to??!!,,,,,if you plant them in rows,,you might be able to plow them out with a potato plow,,I did that one year, course, they were all little,,the bigger ones might break??,,,thingy

i used pelleted seed so i wouldnt have to thin...i just planted them every 6". I think. dont really remember but closer than that makes it hard to weed around the plants. the potato plow sounds like a good idea if you can go at least a foot down.

Pellited seed,,not familar with that don't guess,,,,what is it,,like a seed in a fertilzer pellit or something? Where do you buy them?,,,sounds like that might be a good way to go on fine seed,,,thingy
