I was given a Corona DK23 kerosene heater a couple years ago and could only find clear K1 kerosene in gallons or 5 gallon cans for $7 a gallon.
We can’t buy clear K1 at a pump in Massachusetts so it sat there.
Yesterday I was cleaning up and saw it on the shelf and thought I would try on road diesel in it.
Filled it up and started it with no trouble & no noticeable smoke and let it run for a couple hours.
It was in my 40x60 Garage so I Let it run through the night.
When I closed the garage up it yesterday it was 40 degrees at 5:20 pm this morning at 9am I checked it and it was still running with 1/4 tank of fuel left. The temperature in the garage went up 10 degrees over night from 40 to. 50 with no noticeable smell.
This will be a great economical heat source for a New England winter.

For fresh water, don't forget the hot water heater. One of the reasons we installed an 80 gallon hot water heater was to have 80 gallons of water if the power went out. We have lost power a few times but have yet, knock on wood, had to tap the hot water heater. I have a section of host and a bib to help make the connection a bit easier.

Even a small hot water heater has enough water to keep a family alive for quite some time.

Guess I need to stock up on instant coffee. I was always under the impression that coffee beans didn't go bad as long as they weren't ground, but just reading that they do have a shelf life, but freeze dried instant is almost indefinite. I hate the taste of instant, but any instant coffee has to be better than stale coffee.
While in Viet Nam, I got to the point where I could drink warm beer and while I'd hate to regain that taste, guess it would be better than no beer, but it would take up a lot of space for a 3 month supply for me.

Toilet paper! Lots of toilet paper! I bought a large box of that tightly wrapped industrial style toilet paper for Y2K. The good thing is, that it never gets used up as it is too unpleasant but great to have in an emergency.

I saw the Documentary of the blizzard of 49 a few weeks ago. Quite an eye opener.

Cheap booze is something our government won't let us have. Maybe it's finally time for a still!

I wonder about depending on natural gas in an emergency, seems just like city water it could be disrupted???

Except for my welder, all my electrical power needs are met with my water wheel, my water comes off the mountain from a spring that hasn't varied in the 30+ years I have been using it and it supplied all the water to a cannery in the late 1800's. I get to go grocery shopping once a year for here so stocking up is what we do. 3 greenhouses for produce, been saving my seeds for 25 years(don't tell Monsanto) always have several barrels of gas and a couple of diesel.

Unless the ocean dries up I have all the fish/shellfish I could ever eat out the front door, plus ducks n venison out the back. I have some of the reusable lids but haven't tried them for canning meat yet??? Anyone else try?

Most things I break I buy 2 of the needed parts to fix it so I can fix it again (hopefully not right away;)

The biggie that would really mess up life here would big a major emp. No motors, Might be able to figure out how to get the tractor started but no outboards:( No water wheel or inverter, no radio for entertainment or communication and the biggie NO INTERNET, not sure I can and I know I don't want to live without it out here!

You are in a most envious position. The water wheel especially!

Man, some of you guys have been watching the Walking Dead to much. I think some of you would be suprised how poorly some people would do during a true emergency. Like someone else said, not an inconvienece. One thing I hadn't thought of and something I would do if pushed to it, but kill deer out of season. There are times I can almost walk up and pet them they get so close to the house.

The water is a huge resource, I am looking into adding a second wheel and 2 inverters so I can make 240 and heat my water/dry my clothes with.

But the best thing is it's the sweetest tasting water I have ever had and collecting it from the spring I don't have to filter it:)

It's because of the moose pee....

My sister used to tell me not to drink water because fish pee in it.

Close, actually it's the moose drool, it's so good in fact there is a brewery that makes a great brown ale out of it;)
