I'm new to mowing using a tractor and finish mower. Why does the engine die when I press the brakes?

What type of transmission do you have?

If manual you need to push in the clutch to stop or the brakes will overide the engine and make it stall.

If hydrostatic you will also need to go to neutral for the same reason.

These are NOT like driving an automatic transmission in a car..

If you have an operator presence switch built into the seat, stepping on the brake may lift you up enough to trigger the safety switch. This is easy to check. With the pto engaged, lift your butt off the seat and see if the engine dies. If it dies, then you have the safety interlock. If it doesn't, sorry, I guess that's not the problem
