preventing stone windshield rock chips

Older vehicles yes, newer ones, likely, No. Many now have guidance cameras in front of the rear view mirror, and require specialized glass replacement with camera calibration. Pretty much triples the windshield replacement cost
Exactly. Newer car/truck, replace the windshield and the camera/hi-low beam sensor/etc
has to be re-calibrated. Cost? My wife's GMC Sierra 1500.....$1,200.

Anyone ever try using crazy glue to stop the cracks from spreading? Seen some clips all along, looks plausible...
Pretty good chip filler kits out there. Same type of epoxy resin used by the likes of Safelite.

Important to note that even a filled chip will still show, they just wont let weather in to allow it to get bigger..

Manufacturer: We have made improvements for model year xyz, ...here is the repair bill(4 figures) ...owner faints from sticker stock.
Old classic: same repair bill (low 3 figures)
Owner: reasonable bill.
I will pass on some of the "improvments"

On two lane rural road. Heading the opposite direction when County ditch mower thru a rock. They stopped and claim they will reimburse the damage. We will see. 🤞

This could have been a jogger's head, or a biker's face. Everytime that I drive past somebody out mowing their lawn with the deflector tied back I cringe. Somewhere I have a photo of two dents in the fender of my company truck, from a rock tossed 75 yards or so by somebody's riding mower.
I didn't realize the damage until I got home.

I noticed way LESS stone chipping and nicks when applying Rain-X. The problem is, you got to do it every month. I missed a month, guess what, stone chip and it spider webbed. :cautious:

Mom had a crack that spread across her windshield this summer. She blamed it on the heat, but there was a tiny chip at the origin... and then the heat probably took over. The chip was down by the windshield wipers, and would have been easy to miss if there wasn't a big crack to follow back.

I haven't tried crazy glue, but there are windshield repair kits that are awfully cheap compared to a new windshield. Perhaps just some type of "super glue".

I don't know how long of a crack they'll repair, but if your entire crack fits within a quarter, it is worth trying them out.
Tiny chip and turned on the defrost one cold morning and chip became kind across from defrost vent to defrost vent.

I think it varies on availability. Mom just got her Prius windshield fixed. I think it had some sensors in it that needed calibrated, but overall it was less than $1K.

How old are you talking? Some older windshields have mighty wicked curves.

I talked to a glass shop about my Grumman Olsen, and while they are perfectly happy to make the flat glass windshields from scratch, they can't get the curved side glass on the windshield.

I'll probably eventually get some flat Caterpillar glass made too. I don't expect it to be too expensive.

They spread volcanic cinders around here for traction on the snow/ice. Of course they get thrown up by vehicles and are the reason why I get chip repairs frequently and a new windshield every couple of years.

I swear it's getting worse each year. My wife's car is on it's third windshield (2022). We went on a road trip to Idaho when it was new... 3 rock chips before we got back! I asked the glass guy if the auto glass quality has changed: "No". His explination:
  • Don't tailgate. Ha... my wife drives with the radar cruise on set on the longest distance. She doesnt tailgate.
  • People are driving more than ever. Fair point.
  • Road construction everywhere. Maybe.... idk.
Wish there was a solution... buy windshields in bulk!?!?

Edit: Googled it- auto glass is being made thinner is save weight for fuel efficiency. Also, more and more have designed in electronics and safety equipment... costs are skyrocketing.
