JD 4520, Toolcat 5610, Bobcat S300, Case-IH 125 Pro, Case-IH 245, IH 1086, IH 806
Recent quote for the following:
3520 tractor, deluxe cab, ehydro, mid PTO, R4 tires, rear single SCV and electric diverter kit for 2 more rear outlets, engine heater, rear work light kit, auto cruise control kit, air seat suspension, radio and mount kit, external mirrors, 300CX loader with skid steer carrier and worksite pro 66" skid steer utility bucket for $30,134. No tax (farm exempt). Ready to go. This is just under 15% off list.
What do you think?
This was his initial offer and no haggling (yet). The tractor would be ordered and probably here in 10 days.

I will probably delete the air seat suspension for $500 unless someone can convince me other wise.

Any good reason to go for 3720 (43hp) for extra $1500? These hydros and compact tractor engines seem kind of powerless at road speeds. (I drive some farm tractors with 100- 190 hp). I don't want to step up to the larger frame/weight of the 4000 series. Does the 3720 just have the turbo turned up and more fuel injected?

well i dont own one, yet, lol but yeah in high gear with the hydro, they seem torqueless. remember your in the 50hp or under range here not 100-200 :)

Also the 3320 comes with a 100cu in motor, the 3520 steps back to the 91cu in motor but adds the turbo charger, which most say is a must for any high elevation areas and the 3720 adds an intercooler to cool the air from the hot turbo making even more power, minor changes such as fueling etc, im sure thats all modified someway or another as well to get their 44hp number.

Well I subtracted the off the price of the air seat suspension and added a couple of other things such as larger R4 tires, tool box, and third function hydraulic lines for front end. Now at 16% off list. His initial offer was about 13.7% off list. Will probably not consider 3720. I wonder if going the intercooler turbo and more fuel is putting maybe more stress on the engine just to get a few more hp. The 3720 JD also makes the air suspension seat mandatory. I don't think the seat is worth that much. Now we are discussing trade in of Kubota 3710.

Radman,

I would rethink that 3720 thought. I have one and will tell you, there is a substantial difference between it and a 3520 on power. The numbers will tell the tale also. The 3720 will run on the road also in C range at a speed more to which you are accustomed. The engine is intercooled which makes a big difference in power and some in efficiency. Last year, there was a poster who asked this question about whether the turbo mid framed JD's were "turned up" too much to achieve their power. Myself, and others, posted for the most part that we did not think so. He argued his point--and ultimately bought a 3720 and has not to my knowledge posted since, so he either really liked it or really did not. To me (I am not an engineer) these engines are heavily made, very well-engineered and operate at relatively low engine speeds. They make still relatively little horsepower related to their engine size. I would have no reservations about buying one. I think the 3520 is a great machine, but for the difference in cost, I would strongly consider the 3720.

One more thing, even though expensive, the seat is worth the extra cash.

Talked with dealer again this afternoon. He didn't have his actual numbers but thought the 3720 was about $1700-$1800 higher (selling price, not list price). He will recheck. That would include the air suspension seat. I have ridden on air type suspension seats in the past and they kind of made me feel like a bobble head! Seems like I was always moving slightly up and down. Maybe they are better now. Did test drive 3520 with air suspension, but the ground was fairly smooth and I wasn't overly impressed, but again it was a smooth test drive.

John,

I read your post with interest because I am considering a similar purchase. I too looked at the 3520. However, I am debating about jumping up to the 4120 vs the 3720. You get a larger frame, 4 cyl. turbo "john deere engine", 12 gpm hydraulic flow to the implements plus added capacity for the loader. Space is not an issue. The price difference is $3,000 between the two (3520 vs 4120). The dealer did not have a 3720 to compare prices with. Based on the original posters comments it would only be about $1200 difference in the 3720 vs 4120.

What are your thoughts?

I too thought about the 4000 series, however I wanted a cab which would needed to be a 4320 and higher model. This really begins to inflate the price and the tractor is larger and 900lbs more. Also, I have a 12' dump trailer which now just barely fits my Kubota 3710 and box blade. I don't think the larger 4000 series would fit. I really like the loader of the 4000 series and higher hydraulic flow.

Victor,

I have owned a 4520 also. It was the single best tractor I have had. For power and ability to do heavy work, go with the large framed machine. The Power Tech engines are not as well-known as the Yanmar's, but they are very torquey and run great. The ONLY reason I sold mine and got (my second) 3720 was space and the ability to safely haul the mid frame through the mountains, which were two important factors for me. Also for my needs the difference in abilities was not great. The mid frame was plenty for me and could do everything I needed. For example, a 60" box blade works as well as a 72" on my property and better in some cases. A mid framed tractor, no matter the HP, would have a tough time pulling a 72" BB on my property or that I maintain elsewhere. My 4520 had no trouble at all, but it really did not save any time of do any better job on my particular terrain. As far as power goes, I felt this way: the 4120 is equivalent in feel as the 3520, except larger; the 3720 and 4520 are similar, and the 4720 is without peer in the compact line. I am an advocate of getting the most horses you can. I have never spoken with an owner who lamented about having too much power, but many lament having not enough. None of the tasks I have done challenged either my 4520 or my 3720, but it is nice to know you have "more than enough."
