Price for culvert pipe

I found on craigslist a used 24" x 20' plastic culvert pipe. That would work great for my small creek crossing but i don't know what price to offer. I found a price on the net for new pipe at about $1.80 a foot. Any opinions on what i should offer for used pipe.

$1.80 a foot or $18 a foot. I just bought a 30"x20' culvert and I don't remember the exact price on it as I had two other smaller ones but I think it was in the ballpark of $18 a foot give or take.
Is it a new culvert or a take out, does it have a hole in it (not hard to patch)? Offer him $10 a foot on it and go from there.

A couple of things about plastic culvert...FWIW...

one...they are not allowed by many counties/municipalities...if they are used on county (maintained) etc. roads...

two...there are two basic types of plastic culverts...one (cheap) is just heavy duty corrugated ...the more expensive type has a schedule 40 smooth liner...this prevents water laying in the throughs (mosquito havens etc)

Have you seen the used pipe? It wont rot, rust or wear out if installed properly, like tin culverts do. Unfortunately, it's hard to get out in one piece without cracking it. If they took their time getting it out, then it will be fine. Offer half what i would cost brand new in your area if it passes your inspection. Do you have a way to transport it? Ask about delivery if you can't haul it yourself. Sometimes that's worth a couple bucks.

LOL..yes I mean't $18. It's corragated pipe but I don't know if it has a liner or not. I just want it for on my property for crossing a creek with my atv's and maybe a compact tractor.

The weight of what is crossing it does not matter, the strength comes from the round shape and being buried the correct distance below grade.

$18 per foot sounds high for new culvert to me. The last plastic culvert I bought was 12" x 20' and was just under $100, with the smooth liner. About $5.00 per foot. The 24" should be just about twice as much.

I would start at $100 if it is lined, maybe $50 if it isn't.

I have carried it on the lumber rack on my F-150, well strapped down. OTOH, I was very picky about how that rack was mounted on the truck. The guy who did it wanted to put the bolts about 12" from the back of the bed. I insisted on as close to the rear as he could drill the holes.

Do yourself a favor. Go down to a couple of your local town garages in your area. Chances are they have some pipe they will give that they pulled up or a washout uncovered it and it was replaced. It could be steel culvert that's rusted but for an ATV it'll work for years. Or if you are lucky only part of it will be rusted so you can cut off a section that's long enough for what you need.

I paid about $300 for 18"x20', extra heavy duty.

I recently installed 300' of 18" plastic pipe. It was the ribbed-looking plastic pipe that was a smooth bore inside. I think they called it N12 or something like that. It was $10 per foot. It was real nice to work with. Once I finished digging my trench I was able to snap them in place fairly quickly.

make a habit of visiting your local culvert supply and getting to know the salesman.

I have a Kennedy culvert by me and you would be surprised what they throw away because very slight damage.

I have whole 20' lengths HDPE with chipped bells that I got for nearly 80% off. they range in size from 10 to 36" I always keep them around.

i paid 5.75/ft for a 12 inch by 13 ft and worth every penny, 3 years and 1000's of gallons of runoff later mine still looks brand new on all accounts..

Any idea of what the weight is of a 24x20 HDPD pipe not lined? Can I put it on top of a Grand Cherokee with the factory roof rack?

I don't know if this will help any, but I handled 18" OD dual wall smooth bore N12 pipe recently and the 20' length was readily handled by two men. By myself, I could lift one end and move around while the other was on the ground. So I am thinking it was around 150-160 lbs or so.

I don't know if a factory roof rack has enough span between crossbars to really be stable with such a long heavy load. Normally racks can handle 100-120 lbs of centralized load. I'd worry a long, heavy, draggy load could really twist the heck out of the rack.

Here is the redneck method we use around here to transport 20' culverts when we don't have a 20' trailer. You need an open trailer (12' to 14') with side rails no higher than the tailgate of your pickup truck. Load as much of the culvert into the pickup bed as will fit, the rest of the pipe will extend out over the tailgate across the open space and into the trailer. It works, just don't make any real sharp turns.

That's what I paid also. Mine could be 18" or 20" in diameter; I can't remember for sure.
