Last spring I rented two different stump grinders for a full day of grinding each time. My stumps are all red pine and about 10 to 16" diameter, which were sheared off with about 6 to 10 inches above ground. I ground em to 6" below the ground....and there are not many roots with a pine stump. I was later able to disc / roto till without issues.
I ground about 200++ stumps per day with both a Vermeer and a Rayco 25 hp self contained rental yard grinders. The stump removal cost me less than $1.50 each...with my labor. I'm sure hardwood stumps would go a whole lot slower....but these pine stumps were a breeze. FWIW....I much preferred the steering and stability of the Rayco grinder (if given a choice).
