Timber-Mart South publishes quarterly average pulp and sawtimber prices for the South here: Timber Mart-South Prices South-wide Average

You have to pay to obtain state-specific prices. But as their site says: "BE AWARE THAT PRICES VARY GREATLY DEPENDING ON MANY FACTORS AND THESE MAY OR MAY NOT REFLECT LOCAL TIMBER SALES."

Here in southeast Virginia, the landowners cut usually turns out to be about $1,000 acre. That's for a mixed stand of pulp and hardwood. Pulp only might be a bit less.

There has been a pine tree tract across from my property for sale for a loooong time. It's about 1,500 acres. Last year they started cutting. The trees I see them hauling out of there are barely eight inches at the base.

Times must be hard.

A couple of years ago, I logged a 5 acre parcel before I sold it, same as Larry, but it was 800 bucks per Mbf. Several 6-7 log loads on the truck. A lot different up here in the PNW. 2 K or more per load. I did the logging myself, and just hired a self loading log truck to take them to the mill. I left a lot of trees for real estate value, but still cleared over 25 grand for the timber.

I was just talking to a logger today who said that if I don't need the money I would be a lot happier if I waited a couple years. He expects log prices to climb back to $650/M.

I probably should have logged before the crash, but just wasn't greedy enough.

I have to admit that I like owning a real resource, as opposed to something as shaky as money. The value of timber may drop, but it will come back up again. I'm also not like the crazy cat ladies on Wall Street that accumulate money for the sake of having money. My funds are sufficient for my needs, and I don't see any point to having a bigger bank account. If I'm going to invest the money, I'm already invested in timber, so I may as well let it ride.
