I went to a JD dealer to get a price on 5420 4WD. The price was around 31,500. I got on JD's web site and discovered, the dealer gave me list price. Does anyone know what the normal dealer discount is on JD tractors? Surely, they don't get list. I don't think they want to sell tractors!

It is going to depend a lot on the time of the year, how many are on the lot, if he needs to order one etc, but I think you might be able to get 5-8% discount without much of a problem.

I have a JD5410...I'll pull out the invoice and see what I ended up paying.

Thanks EJB, I'll be waiting your reply. By the way, how do you like your 5410? Any regrets? Also, why JD and not NH or the orange one? I'm still looking and need all the help I can get. That green one sure is purdy!

OGGIE,

I think that that price sounds a little bit high. I paid around $35,000 for a 5520 MFWD with the power reverser transmission and a 541 MSL loader. The midlawns web site lists the following prices

2WD, Standard Station, Collar Shift, Bar Tires $21,999.00
Tilt Steering Wheel Add $151.00
Isolated Open Station Package Add $835.00
Cab Add $7,290.00
Cab With Air Suspension Seat Add $7,875.00
Limited Slip MFWD Add $4,440.00
SyncShuttleTransmission Add $605.00
SyncShuttleTransmission With Shiftable PTO Add $870.00
PowrReverser Transmission Add $2,575.00
Dual Selective Control Hydraulic Valve Add $850.00
Telescoping Draft Links Add $240.00
16.9-30 Bar Tires & Fronts (Recommended 2WD ) Base
19.5L-24 Industrial Tires & Fronts (Recommended 2WD ) $215.00
21.5L-16.1 Turf & Fronts (Recommended 2WD) $40.00
16.9-30 Bar Tires & Fronts (Recommended 4WD ) Base
19.5L-24 Industrial Tires & Fronts (Recommended 4WD ) $410.00
21.5L-16.1 Turf & Fronts (Recommended 4WD) <$120.00>

This should give you a pretty reasonable idea of where the price should come in. Some dealers will quote list price, I think because they do not want people to try to play one dealer against the other for a better deal. Just my .02

rf33,

How many remotes did you get? Any option you would do different. I like the 5520 but was thinking about the sync shuttle with the econ-pto.

Ron, thanks for the help. If I decide on the 5420, I'm sure my dealer will match the Midlawn's price. Did you compare the Kubota M8200 or 9000 when you bought your 5520? I think the M6800 compares to the 5420. Need all the opinions I can get.

What size bush hog would you recommend. All I have now is a 6 foot I pull with an old Allis. I mow about 75 acres. You know a 7 foot is cheap compared to an 8 foot for only cutting one more foot. And a 10 is just so big, I don't how well the 5420 would pull it. Any thoughts?

My neighbor has the 5510 with syncshuttle and third remote. I have a 5410 syncshuttle and I wish I had gone ahead and gotten it with the econo pto since I seeem to do alot of mowing. Since the loader uses two of the remotes I wish I had also gotten the third at the start. I will sometime pick up a 10ft. bushhog for the pastures and I am sure it will have no problem handling it.

I reccomend it highly after 280 hours but who knows down the road.

I have the two mid mount remotes with the joystick control, and two rear remotes. I am quite happy with the tractor. The MSL loader takes a little getting used to if you have used non-MSL loaders in the past, but once you get used to it, it really is nice.

OGGIE,

I did not compare the kubota tractors, I however did compare the New Holland TN90, and found the Deere to be priced about $2500 less. Not exactly sure that I was comparing apples to apples, as some of the specs were different, namely the TPH lift capacity was much higher on the NH.

The larger Kubotas did not seem as popular around here, so I did not even visit the nearest orange dealer. I am sure that they are good products if they are anything like their smaller counterparts.

As to mower size selection, I think that your 5420 will pull most mowers, and as such your size selection should be based on how much time you consider acceptable based on how much you have to mow, and how wide you can get away with for getting in between all of the trees and other obstacles on your property.

The cost difference between the 7' and 8' cutters is most likely because the 8' cutters will generally have two shorter blades as opposed to the 7' single blade. This adds two more gearboxes to the mower, and can substantially increase the cost.

If it were me, and if I had the clearance, for mowing 75 acres, I would not look at anything less than a 10' cutter, and would probably consider a 15' batwing mower. Perhaps something like the BUSH HOG® 2615L Flex Wing Rotary Cutter.

The place I bought my 'tiny' Woods BB60 rotary cutter had two of the Woods bat wing mowers. As you guys probably know, they are huge. I had seen pictures of them, but standing next to one you really get a sense of their size. I wouldn't have enough room to even store one. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
