my dealer has a 2002 MX5 that is new/old stock. it doesnt have front or rear chain guards. i would only add one to the front. he is asking $1300ish. is this a good buy?

That is what I paid about a year ago for one that had been hooked up a couple of times before the owner decided it was too big for his tractor and he traded down to an LX-4.

Get him to throw in the front chain guard, and you'll have a good deal.

Sounds like a darn good deal considering I just paid $2300 for an assembled MX6 with chain guards...

Any idea how much the designs have changed since early 2000?

I paid $1725 for a new MX5 without chain guards in Dec '05.
I later added front and rear guards for 300 something.

Seems like $1300 is a good deal!

after my lx6 developed some problems, I went shopping again and noticed the "bush hog" brand and an off brand they make is much stronger, and is made with box steel frame. I won't buy a JD brand cutter again. Sorry for the negative attitude about this, just telling it like it is.

The "L" in LX stands for Light. As in light duty.
The MX is medium duty.

I'd go with the MX5... Given the work I've already put my MX6 through, I can't see using anything else.

That and the LX uses a shear-bolt vs. slip-clutch in the MX. I don't think you'll be unhappy with the purchase at that price.

there is a slip clutch on the lx5 that i am trading back to the dealer.

Clutch is optional on the LX4 & 5. Standard on the LX6.

Does that $1300 price include trading your LX5?

NoMo is right on the slip clutch being optional on the LX series. It's standard on the MX's.... The MX's are truly the heavy-duty variety of these cutters and I can't see buying anything but the MX for brush cutting work.
