Wow! I hate guys who quote statistics.../w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Seriously, I think a TC40D is fine for 8 acres if you want to do the kinds of jobs it can do, but my comment about size was really intended to be a caution for the finish mowing work where you have to swing a mower on one end and a loader on the other when you turn. I have taken my loader off once and it was very easy, but I don't know if I'd want to do that all the time, everytime I mow. I leave it on for using my rotary cutter.

I admit that I think a backhoe is often an expensive toy. I just start getting this choking feeling in my throat when I think about what they cost. I have rented a full-size New Holland 555 several times and I got "spoiled" to that immense power. Do you think you have or will get your money's worth out of your backhoe? The bottom line is whether you would recommend one since you own one. I'm an "outsider" looking in on this one. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Mike,

Recently, a TBN member just did the same thing... started looking at compacts and ended up with a John Deere 5420/5520 turbo charged utility... /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The more I think about the backhoe!!!! You guys might be right.

I have a JD410 backhoe, but I thought it would be nice to have this smaller unit for around the property.

For the price$7,000.,you guys are right on.Probably not worth it. Let's face it you can do a lot of rentals before you reach $7,000.

I think I might hold off on the backhoe.

Thanks

I wasn't trying to be the guy who quotes statistics. But your comments about size got me worried (I've been looking at the 40D myself). So I wanted to see how much land the other owners had. I thought John's situation was interesting, having two tractors on 4.5 ac, but I wasn't trying to single him out. I'd keep both if I was him.

My situation is I just moved into my new house 12/22 that is on 11.5 acres. I've been waiting until the house was finished to buy a tractor so I'd have somewhere to store it. Everyone local I talked to said I should be looking in the 32-35hp range for my needs/land.

I drove a Kubota L3010, JD 4300, and TC 33D. I didn't really the hydro pedal arrangement on the Kubota or TC 33D, among other things. So I decided to focus on JD and the class III Boomers. So it was a TC 35D vs JD 4400. But then I decided I'd rather have the 40D w/ 4 cyl over the 35D. And JD is releasing the new 4000 ten series, which have some nice features, so my final two choices are a TC 40D or a 4410.

Several things make me lean toward the NH, but the size has been in the back of my mind the whole time. So that's why this thread got me thinking so much. {Sorry for the long post, but the decisions are consuming about 98% of all of my thoughts.}

Brad, I think you will love the TC40D. My comments on size relate to the fact that we all want "all the goodies" to hang onto our tractors and often forget what a pain in the rear it can be to connect/disconnect those goodies. I love my Class III Boomer because it is so strong and takes all I dish out. It just fits all the day-to-day things I do; however, I admit I have no intention of ever doing finish mowing with it. I haven't loaded my rear tires (yet) because I haven't needed it. When I get a toothbar for my loader bucket, I may have to break down and get the tires loaded, but for now the weight with my loader and boxblade is about the maximum I can safely carry on my 18ft utility trailer, so I don't want to exceed the limit (5,000#-net @ 7,000#-gross). There are so many things to think about that it does "fry" you brain./w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif
I can't speak to the same issues with the JD 4410, but I suspect it is very similar. I think you will love either one and be happy that you bought the more powerful tractor. I think power is cheap compared to the cost of what you might hang onto the front or rear of your tractor. Your tractor is like the foundation of your house. The entire stucture can only be as good as that foundation./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Mike, welcome to TBN. I think you will find the people here as helpful as at plowsite. I origanally looked at a kubota L3010 w/FEL & BH and ended up with a local year old (72 hrs) NH 1920 w/7308 FEL & 758C BH. This tractor is definitely bigger than I was looking at but I think it will work out just fine. There seems to be quite a bit of backhoe work for the compact loaders (they can get in places a full size hoe can't and their lighter weight won't do any where near the surface damage. Only you can decide what's best for you. welcome again.

Jim, I too think I will love the TC40D /w3tcompact/icons/love.gif.

I just spent the last two hours at the dealership (supposed to be at work /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif). I drove a TC35D and a TC45 w/ 16LA loader. They didn't have a 40D, but they have another dealership about 30 minutes away that might. They're going to check. I also wanted to drive one w/ SS, but they didn't have any TCs w/ it, just some TNs. Maybe their other dealership will have one of those too.

He's supposed to call me back this afternoon with a quote.

My story is about the same as JohninCa, I started out with a TC29 and later traded it in for a TC40D there is nothing wrong with the class II boomers but for my needs(wants) I am glad to have the class III, it does seem to give a more stable platform for what I do.

jinman,
I spent quite a bit of time gagging over the backhoe price myself. I've justified it in my mind by listing out all of the projects I wanted to do. I easily came up with 7 days of rental time, at $300 per day. The projects don't lend themselves to lumping the 7 days together for a weekly rate of $1000. That brings up another justification, convenience. Last year, I rented a 555E for a week. One of the smaller projects was 200' of trenching, 4 feet deep. It was two months later before I finish installing the three 2" water lines, associated valves, hydrants, etc.,.

I have to agree with you, the 555E has incredible power. I removed some HUGE stumps, and dug out several large (4'+ diameter) rocks! As far a recommending a 758C, I haven't had a chance to even use mine yet. I'll let you know what I think after the big test this weekend.

bcoleman,
...I'd keep both if I was him....
Now that's my kind of thinking! This Monday should be interesting. We're having 11 yards of 3/4" rock, and 6 yards of 6" rock (boulders?) delivered. The wife and I are going to go at the piles with both tractors.

Well maybe I just might get the backhoe after all.

My father inlaw was over last night (he owns his own electrical company). We got chatting and he said that he would love to find somebody who has a small backhoe to dig his electrical trenches. So the backhoe might be back in the picture.

Only humans can rationalize something they want.LOL
