Prices at Wal-mart

Yep, stroker, sometimes the product is different and sometimes it's the same. And sometimes it's easy to learn which, and sometimes it isn't. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

By overpriced I mean higher than the competition. Bottom line type deal. If we are talking about more than a simple product and include things like service and such then we are talking about a different product.

The original thread showed an example of a small company beating the price of the large. Don't know how they did it, don't really care.

I think you can add a third item to that list of reasons. 3) The big box guy is getting greedy and trying to close the gap.

Lots of mom and pops out there still despite the big boxers.

I read somewhere ,that Wal-Mart has so much buying power ,that the people that they buy from are not even paid until Wal-Mart sells the product .I think this is also a big blow to Mom & Pop stores.

( Mark, I found out your never too old to learn, and hopefully you picked up your never too young to start learnig, so don't "assume" that I or anybody else who talk about price have made numerous trips to save a dollar but burn up 5 dollars in gas. It didn't happen.

i hadnt meant to imply you did that, i was just sorta makin a general statement about what some people will do to try and save money. wasnt meant as a personal thing against you sorry it came across that way. i learn somethin new everyday, not affraid to learn nor am i affraid to admit that theres alot i dont know! interestingly enough, i happened to be in both tsc and walmart yesterday so with this post in mind i looked at the prices of there rotella, tractor supply was 23 cents more than walmart!! so i guess it may be a regional thing too or somethin like that i dunno. i wasnt buying any so it didnt matter but i found it interesting. i am lucky enough to be able to buy oil from my employer who buys DA lubricants brand oil in bulk, we have a 650 gallon tank for engine oil and for hydraulic oil, i fill up a 5 gallon pail and give him the cash and it works out well, the price that they pay for it is less than i could get tractor supplys store brand oil for, my employer gets a pretty good break cause they buy more than 500 gallons at a time.

It won't be long until Wal-Nuts is the only show in town. They are arrogant but they usually are the cheapest. Also, the one stop shopping appeals to me, let Ms.New get the groceries while I poke around back in the auto/hdwe dept's.
Oh btw, while nosing around in K-Mart the other I was surprised to see them selling Craftsman tools. Albeit,a rather limited selection. Anyone know if they are planning to expand ?

I have found the big box stores usually have a lower grade of products. Blue Jeans at big box stores usually have crooked seams and the waist sizes vary by more than 1 to 2 inches. At the DIY place, their tile is poor quality but good price. I know tile may look ok, but when you start cutting them you will notice how the cheaper just break, or how the glaze is not consistent... Just my 2 cents. I prefer to pay a little more for quality, especially, if it saves me aggravation.

By the way, jibjab.com has a great spoof on big box stores.

I agree about the big box quality. Customers are actually paying more because they're getting less, and they have service to match the quality. Most everything they carry is spec'd down especially for them. But now that Walmart is being forced to actually pay their employees (lost $157 million suit for missed lunch break pay) their prices may go up.

The same parent company owns both Sears and Kmart. I suppose you can expect several crossover products in the future.

I'd like to toss my opinion in on this subject. I'm not playing off of anyone else's post just stating my opinion. I own a small mom & pop business I survive because my customers are willing to pay a little more for the products I sell. In return for this customer loyalty I stand behind everything I sell, I'll deliver after hours If a customer can't come in I'll go in on a Sunday to take care of a specific customer who needs needs me to. I enjoy knowing my customers wants and needs and serving them to the best of my ability. When I decided to open my own business, I remembered going shopping with my mother, she knew the butcher, he knew what cuts she liked, same with the baker and the clothing store etc. I wanted to have the same kind of raport with my customers and it's worked for 15 years. Locally I shop in the small stores like mine, sometimes I pay a little more, but I think the attention and effort to make me happy is worth it. When I go on vacation in a strange community I usually head for Wal-mart because its one stop shopping is very convienient when you don't know your way around. I hope I didn't bore you with my tale. I guess I just wanted to let people know that there are still some of us trying to hold on to the old ways. Happy New Year and Best of Luck to all. Guy

Ahh yes advertising...
We victimize our selves by paying too much attention to advertising. We buy something we do not need. We buy stuff thinking it will solve our porblem when the reality is quite different. We vote for people we later regret. , etc

We only have ourselves to blame /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
