Just got a quote from my dealer on a 850 diesel. Also got an unpleasant look at John Deere's laughable "nick-you-til-it-hurts" pricing strategy.
1. If you go the JD website and use the "Build it yourself" configurator, the price comes up $11,339. No mention of the recent $500 cut. No mention of any other add-on's. It just tells you to submit for a quote from a dealer.
2. Dealer says JD charges a shipping fee that is added to the price (didn't get what that is). If a dealer is big enough, JD may not charge that.
3. Dealer says JD no longer ships units that must be prepped at the dealer; instead JD charges a roll-on/roll-off fee of $300 which of course is passed along to the buyer.
4. Dealer says JD reduced the profit on all Residual division products down to 6-7%, which makes a dealer discount almost impossible.

Would appreciate comments from anyone else looking at Gators -- is this what you're hearing?

Have you looked at the japanese mini trucks yet? I have a 6 wheel polaris ranger and when that goes I'm going to looking at one of the mini trucks. For less than a gator you can get a full cab, ac, diesel, 4wd, and a dump bed that also opens to a flatbed. About the same size but built as a road vehicle. Do a google. There are more and mroe dealers for them and they're worth taking a look at. Also a couple of pretty good videos on youtube if you want to see some in action.

Try another dealer. Aren't these things made in Wisconsin? JC

I bought the limited edition camo diesel with just about every option available--and it cost me over 17,000.00.

Sure, I had buyer's remorse, but I've got to tell you, I'm lovin' it!

Point is, it's the options that add up!

I would definitely get some alternative pricing. I did a lot better than that on my XUV (a bit over one year ago) and it has everything imaginable on it, even some things not offered by JDC.

At one time i considered getting a JD XUV or the Polaris, it was a tough decision between the two, but I eventually like the polaris better for the cost. The JD was good too, but the polaris was a bit better for me. Price was a big issue too, the polaris was cheaper.

If you are going JD, then get some pricing from multiple dealers and that can bring the price down of your local dealer substantially. Also try for used units.

I seen my dealer last night and asked him about this post. He stated that most things have seen a 5-7% increase, but did not seem to agree witht he rest of the original post.

He stated to me that he can ussually end up about 6-10 percent off the JD Online Build cost, out the door.

On my last tractor he was more like 15%..... So they might not have as much room on Gators as they do tractors....

I do know the margins are tighter on the Gators, but I am not sure by how much. Based on my research, an average price reduction on these machines is about 10% +/- 2 ish points. If one gets a better percentage discount than this, he/she is doing pretty well. Attachments and accessories will kill you though, as they are not marked up by much and can really add to the non-negotiable part of the price. For example, if someone orders an 850D Gator, the discount might be 10% but add in $2000 in add-on's at 3-5% off (if that) and it can really affect the bottom line of the Gator price. One has to keep this in mind when pricing out those gotta-have items.

Thanks for the several comments. I will contact a couple of other places. However, it's getting harder to get competing quotes. The dealership trend around these parts (Wis) is that a few bigger dealers have been buying up other dealers, so I am finding the same "deal" wherever I go, at least within 50 miles. The place I've spent most of my green on green (sorry) is now part of a 4 store chain. The next closest has 5 stores.

I just do not see why people spend so much on these little go carts when you can get a new or almost new small truck or suv for the same price

I am the same way about the cost. I looked at the Kubotas for a hunting machine but just could not pay that much money for a play pretty. I found an old 88 s-10 4wd for $1200 and spent about $600 so far fixing it up and I have been wearing it out for 2 years now. I can go through a lot of street legal, heated and cooled, stereo equipped play trucks for the money you are looking at and can do a lot more with it and get my money back when I am done. These things are priced crazy, I just don't see paying enough to buy a very nice truck for one of these machines. Maybe one day I will hit the lottery and change my mind:)

You guys that didn't buy one because of the price made the right decision for yourselves. The price of everything is relative. In my case, the Gator was for my wife who didn't want a mini-truck to navigate the tight twisty trails on our property, wanted something new with an appropriate load height and hydraulic dump. The Gator was exactly what she wanted and, equipped the way we bought it, cost less than what many people in these parts spend on snowmobiles which they only get to use a few months of the year by trucking them someplace else. You may consider it a "toy", but it's actually a tool used to increase our enjoyment and use of our property.

BTW, she said she is much happier with the Gator than she ever would be with a new BMW or other look-at-me car. Her '03 Forester does all she needs, and she works it like a truck, not wanting to drive either my F-250 or my 755.

To each their own, as they say.

Apples to Oranges! They serve very different purposes. A small suv or small truck can't even approach the tasks a utility vehicle can. Still loving my Cub Cadet Big Country after 7 years.

I can tell you from experience, my gator can go just about anywhere! I have challenged that guy to make it through some pretty tough bush / mud / water obstacles--and so far so good!

Red Hawk;
You wouldn't be speaking of Riester & Snell ...... would you ? They must have eight stores on the east side as well. They bought the local dealership and closed it. You get a quote and it is entered in the computer so the next dealer can look it up and give the same figure. I haven't had any success buying from them.

No, my local dealer isn't R&S. It's Horizon; they are allied with Polfus out of New Richmond WI. Their network includes 7 locations in Western Wis and Minnesota.
Another is Kohel out of Eau Claire Wis with 4 locations.

I was told JD wants to go to "no-haggle" pricing like so many of the car dealers. Translation: keep the margins up closer to list price. I am hoping and trusting it falls in its face, because there aren't a lot of buyers that are ladies and others who are squeamish about negiotiating for a tractor.

I will have to say my Gator has been the most handy money I have spent on equipment in some time. I have 135 hours or so on mine in about one year and it runs and performs great. I am amazed each time I use it what it can do. They are expensive, but seemingly worth the money.

Take a look at the BMX new line of ATV that are out now. For about $5800 you can get one with 4WD, winch, MP3 stereo, hydraulic dump bed and 2 forward gears and a larger motor than Gator . Check out this website for photos and pricing. I think this pricing means you have to intall the wheels and windshield and a few other items that takes a couple of hours. But hey, the thing looks awesome.
