That Case looks great!

I originally was looking for a 10,000 pound max machine with a 6 way blade and ripper...

Everything I found needed a lot of work or cost too much...

Ended up going with a D3 that come in between 15 and 16,000 pounds... The only downside is that I can't transport it myself.

The good thing is the few parts I have needed in the last 15 years are only a 10 minute drive to my CAT Dealer... these guys are great... needed a hose one time and they called back to the shop and told me they would make it on the spot...

Those old military Cats had a lot of nickle in the motors and were built to last. A union training site still has a couple around here. The cost of fuel alone is high to run one. And that is with nothing breaking.

Crawler with FEL & home brew pto logging winch/arch. MikeD74T

I'd say it weighs a good bit more than your 5000lb estimate.

t-data lists just the BARE crawler @ 7k. Plus you have a winch and loader:confused2:

I've been very fortunate with my Case 310G - similar to Mtn View Ranch's - but not nearly as nice as his. I was looking for one in the $8,000-$10,000 range (thinking of a grey Komatus D20 or something) and came across mine just a few minutes from my house. I've had to do a little work on it (hydraulic lines, adjusting brakes, starter motor) but nothing really any different than working on an old tractor. I'm probably not invested into it more than $7,000 total and I've had it for about 5 years. I've dug one pond with it myself, helped clean out another one, cleared who-knows-how-many acres of scrub/brush and done other various grading chores around the farm. I think it weighs about 5 tons as it sits, so that's about $1,000 or so as scrap value. If it died today, I think I would still have come out ahead for the amount of work I have accomplished with it vs. having to rent/hire the work done - plus I have the fun and convenience of having my own crawler sitting at the barn.

I agree that the old crawlers can be a crapshoot - I wasn't really sure what I was buying, but I'm very happy with what I ended up with. It seems as though I see several of the old Case 310's floating around - maybe that would be a good option for someone looking for an old, small dozer.

Good luck and take care.

Like some of us here, these "old timers" can no longer put in 40 hour weeks, but they still can be mighty useful, puttering around the homestead. . .

I think I would offer a little under scrap price as that's usually what you get if you bring it there. If they come pick it up then the price is not that much. I think I would find a running one of the same model and vintage and keep this one as a parts machine. If you don't mind paying with wrenches you can usually keep them going for a long time. You're not going to make a lot of money off of it working it but if you have some land they are real nice to have.

I would see how much it weighs to determine how much it's worth - around here, scrap is about $250/ton right now. If the machine weighs 3 or 4 tons (my guess, I think they are fairly small machines, but I don't know if I've ever seen one in person), then I would guess it is at least "worth" $750-$1,000, if you have a truck/trailer that can move it. If it's a project that you want to get into and learn about old iron, have a place, tools and time to work on it, - go for it. If you need to get something up and running quick and don't want to do a lot of work on it, I would pass on it.

The only other thing to consider would be if you could find another 440 of the same/similar vintage for a relatively low price and you might be able to make one good machine out of two bad ones - but I would consider this a long shot at best.

Good luck with whatever you do and take care.

Plus, I'd deduct what it would cost to have someone haul it to the scrapyard for a fee. Brings the price to pretty much nothing.

If you are a glutten for punishment, you will be up against a very pricey refurbish. I would'nt even consider it unless it had sentimental value such as your grandpaw used to use it. And even then, you better have deep pockets.

With the way construction is at a near standstill, and going to stay that way for the foreseeable future, I'd look for a working unit too. Your cousin ought to give the broken one to you, and be glad to get it out of there, but do you want to go into the scrap business for a one time deal?
