Junk,

Try this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

You can also go the Windows XP home page (I assume you are running XP) and do a search for "startup programs". You will get several interesting links to knowledge base articles. One of these may help you fix your problem.

Windows XP home page

Here is link to a knowledge base artice that may be of some help. It explains in detail how to deal with startup programs. Look under Windows 2000 for help.

Junkman,

If you feel comfortable using regedit (it is not for the faint of heart) you can use it to search for entries the contain things like PrintShop, or some variation there of. An alternative would be to pick up one of the registry cleaning programs and see if you can find the entry.

Let us know what you have found.

On the bottom left of the screen is your start menu. Click on that and see if there is a search function. If there is, click on "For files and folders" and a new window should open. In the "Search for files and folders named" type in PAINT or PAINT SHOP. "Look in" should already be "Local Hard Drives (C:)". Click search and see what comes up. I've done it before and it has worked for me. I'm running Windows ME. I am by no means a wiz, just self taught by trial and error. Good luck.

The remains of the failed install may still be somewhere on the disk. Look in \temp, \windows\temp, and in Program Files.

Also, I've had good luck using Windoctor (Norton Utilities) to remedy incomplete links.

If nothing else works Junkman, try downloading this little program that is free and you can disable stuff you don't want to start up.

Junk... I'm very sorry. I asked you the very first question about this and then forgot to come back to the thread to check it out.

Background... most software for Windows now uses a MS technology called "Microsoft Installer". It stores information about installs in the registry and does a MUCH better job of staying away from "DLL h3ll". Downside... it also remembers partial or aborted installs and is a pain in the rump to get it "just drop it" in a case such as yours.

Microsoft quietly made a little utility just for cleaning up such things. Please check this microsoft knowledge base article and download the utility from the link inside. It should fix you right up, but if it doesn't, then PM me and I'll be glad to beat it into submission for you.

Oh.. don't let that knowledgebase article scare you. MS tries to always make it sound like messing with the registry, even with doing it with a software tool is some kind of voodoo magic. Its not that bad. It is not dangerous to use this tool. Just run it, choose the software causing the problem then click remove. Its really that simle.

Your problem has nothing to do with viruses or anything foreign attempting to take over your computer. Any of the various spybot removers already mentioned will do nothing as you have already found out since this is not a spybot issue.

The key to solving your problem is the error 1706. What is the text associated with the error mesage? Is it No valid source could be found for product Print Shop ? Or something similar? Does the dialog box ask you for a file location? What version of Windows are you running? XP or 2000 or something else?

The 1706 error is caused when the system tries to run or initialize an object that was installed from a Windows Installer package and that object could not be found. The self healing feature of Windows Installer then tries to re-install that object and since it can't be found you get the error message.

Getting rid of this message without the original Installer package .msi file may be tricky and involve editing the registry and/or your Group Policy settings. The WIndows Installer Cleanup utility mentioned previously may do the trick. If not, then it's back to the registry.

getut:....... I found this last evening while doing a Google search to find remedies. I downloaded the program, but it didn't remove the problem.

MadReferee..... You have hit the nail on the head. I spoke with a friend that is one of the developers of Windows and he told me that there is no way that he knows to get rid of it without the original disk. The 1706 error code says that it can't find the files or something like that. I just keep hitting "cancel" and after about 6 times it goes away until I shut down and reboot. I am running Windows XP Professional.

I have used some programs such as Windows Registry Repair Pro, and Norton Utilities, but none can eliminate this problem. Thanks for all the suggestions, and I will keep trying. There has to be a solution, but finding it is the hard part. I am determined not to let this one get me down. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
