So do you pronounce Massey like m-ace-e (long a)or the other way? Is there a proper version or is it just a regional thing?

Mass-ee is how I have always heard it, but expect there are variations.
Like Cairo, IL is not pronounced like Cairo, Egypt.
Same with Moscow, ID not like Moscow, Russia.

I think that if strangers pull into a town thinkin' they know how to pronounce the name, then the local folk will figure out a way to pronounce it differently, so they can point out the mistake. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

At least that's the way I've heard it.

Here in the south, I think that I have heard a few extra sylables added to it on occasion, but I would have to agree the above pronunciations.

Mass-ee is the ONLY way I have ever heard it. Maybe they add the extra syllable in a different part of the country where I've never been?

I know Cairo, IL, Cairo, OH, and Cairo, WV are all pronounced different than Cairo, Egypt. I wonder how they say Massey in those towns? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ohio has Louisville AND Lewisville, and they are both pronounced the SAME way. Every once in a while, an out-of-towner will try to pronounce the Louisville in Ohio like the one in Kentucky! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Both Texas and Ohio have a Medina, but they, too, are pronounced differently.

Houston, GA is pronounced differently than Houston, TX... just to add to the trivia. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
