Just a bit off topic, but anybody else remember the Candid Camera show years ago where an interviewer, speaking with a gentleman from the south (yeah, a Yankee here:D) about pronunciation...

He was asking the interviewee to pronounce the two words, "oil" and "old."

I have a pretty good ear for languages, but I could hear no difference whatsoever-- "oal" and "oal"! Sorry, but I just had to laugh!

I still find regional accents and euphemisms a fascinating hobby, enjoying all these posts! (Where is Baw-Mer-- Baltimore? Never heard that one!:D:D)

I could never figure the Bal-ti-more being Baw-mer myself but that's where he was talking a-boot.
One of our best ones in the south to mid south is Fire. Far and Fire are both pronounced the same. I know this will confuse some of my southern friends because they will say "Yah, they are pronounced the same so what's his point". Actually it was a Louisiana Pastor that pointed this out so clearly to us from Ky one day. He was one of those Fire is Fi-er guys. He didn't know what a farman was.:)

I know this is going WAY off topic, but after watching Top Gear yesterday, this thread has me thinking about the way they pronounced something...

san-BURH-ned

A large, hairy, drooling, tri-colored k-9.

My FIL is from Kentucky... He has the hardest time pronouncing "solder" in a way that I understand. soar-der is about the way it comes out. I figure in another couple years I'll be used to it and won't have to ask him "huh?" so many times before I figure it out.
