Can anyone explain how the proof meter works on my NH 1920? The owner's manual says it is engine hours at PTO speed (2300 rpm?). Most of my hours are at much lower rpm so my question is should I be doing oil changes at 1/2 the reccomended hours? Thanks for any help.

No Bill, you do the changes based on the meter. If your running at higher RPM's for the same amount of time as say 1/2 the RPM, that is the engine is run for 1 hour at PTO speed and then you use the loader at half PTO speed, theoretically you are wearing your engine half as much. So many other things apply like load etc., but I would simply stick to the proof meter reading. Keeping track of the various RPM's throughout the time between changes would be ridiculous anyway. Airplanes work the same way and they base their maintainence on the hour meter very strictly. Rat...

Rat, thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure if it was a true hour meter or was somehow tied into the tachometer. I generally change oil at half the recommended intervals in all my vehicles and equipment.(My son uses full synthetic in a 2000 Jeep Wrangler and changes the oil every 2500-3000 miles, it looks like tea when he drains it). Thanks again.

My owners manual for my NH TC30 says that the hour meter runs true at 1800 rpm. It will record faster at speeds above and run slow at speeds below. The manual does not say anything about adjusting service intervals to account for the difference. So, an hour of mowing at 2300 rpm will register 1.25 hours on the meter.
