I bought this 500 gallon propane tank about 5 months ago. Got a good price on the tank and it just needed a paint job. It will be going on our new house site whne that project gets started some time in the future.

Here's the picture before getting started removing the old paint. The top layer is flaking very bad. My picture did not show this very well.

Here is a picture of the serial # tag. It was built in 1956. That explains why it is at least twice as heavy as "Hank Hill" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif at the propane store said it should be. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Do those big tanks need to be hydrostatic tested after so many years?

Here is after a bath with the pressure washer. I also hit the seams, feet, and pick up loops with the sand plaster. The whole tank got a sanding with 100 grit sand paper. The remaining paint is extremely hard to take off. Sand plaster it taking it off but is slow. Also with the age of the tank I'm not sure what type of paint the bottom layers are (lead based). Top layers were oil based (got a can of paint from previous owner with tank).

I'm going to try to locate the mfg of the tank tomorrow. They might still be in business.

Does anyone know what type of paint would have been used in 1956 on these tanks? Should I just paint over what paint is still on the tank thats sticking well ot take it to bare metal?

Thanks
James

Gary, this tank has been tested and was in use when I got it. The propane supplier is local and will be filling it when I get ready. Checked that before making the investment. They were the ones that disconnected it and loaded it on my trailer.

Anyone remember Iris having fun on the Harvey pond project? She dug the hole for the 1000 gallon tank that took the place of this tank.
