I recently got a new 5' landpride mower for use on my TC-29D. Got it on and hooked up and working. does a good job on my 1 acre front yard. However I need some advice. When it is resting on the gauge wheels the raise/lowerlever for the 3 point is forward of the range designated as the "float range".
Also a couple of ttimes when I have raised the mower whill engaged I get a sound that doesn't seem right.
Question 1:
How should I rig the three point to put it in the float range while cutting? Come to think of it it was in the Foward portion of the "float" range when I had the bush hog attached. There is I suspect a failure to appreciate the proper Geometry of these systems.

Question 2: When I raise the cutters( both Bush hog and finish, do I need to throttle down, disengage , reposition, relower the unit and then reengage.

A personal note: I am glad to be back and am enjoying reading the posts. I left DFW on June 14 for a 3 day business trip. Got back to home on July 25. My 85 year old mother fell on the 16th grevoiusly injured herself dying on the 26th of June. I have been a busy boy with the arrangements. Also have been dealing with getting an 80 year old aunt settled in assisted living, arranging for the house we have had since new in 1921. The house is not A/Ced by the way.And not least, experiencing the sensation of having my Aunt and myself being sued by some relatives who were not even named in the will.

Needless to say I am glad to be back to a normal level of chaos. Riding the Bull, as my wife dubbed our TC-29D, is quite therapudic.

Regards,

"Question 1:

Your rockshaft lever (3PH control) should be in the full down position for the rear finishing mower. However, you don't want the the lever all way down when using the cutter.
The top link of the 3PH should be lengthened as much as possible. However, if your property has abrupt transitions from level to slopes, you want to watch that the upper bracket (on the mower) doesn't contact the PTO shaft. Mine does, BTW, and occasionally, I'll unhook the top link in certain areas I mow.
The lengthened top link will require shortening should you want to transport the mower.

You don't want to operate either implement in the raised position. Those side skirts on the cutter and mower provide stiffness and reduce objects being thrown by the force of the blades. Raising either implement while engaged could result in a safety hazard.
Why would you want to, anyway?
I did read in one of the cutter manuals (not Land Pride) that one should slightly raise the cutter (just the front end) to prevent the side skirts from digging in on a turn. By that, they mean just raising the front a couple inches.
So to answer your question, YES, you do want to disengage the PTO when raising the mower and cutter.

Please accept my condolences on your Mother's death... That's a tough thing....I went through it about 6 years ago.

The noise or vibration you experience when lifting a PTO driven implement could be caused from the increased angle that the universal joints on the PTO shaft have to work at. A lot of universal joints don't like working smoothly over a 25 degree angle.

Sorry to to hear of your loss in your family and all the other stuff you have experienced. Hope all the relative problems are settled in your favor.

Dave,

On the cutter: When set up on a flat and level surface, the skids on the deck should be slightly lower in front than the rear... an inch or 2 is about right. At this time, the top link should have a good bit of slack in it.

When raised into the carry position, the cutter's deck should be level to slightly drooping to the rear. The more whoop-de-do's you have, the more rear droop you will need to track them.

Sometimes you can't seem to get the mowing height and angle right at the same time. This can be very frustrating. The solution is to adjust air in the tires between min and max as needed. Works every time.

Start the cutter off like this: Set engine to idle or just above idle. Cutter deck on short or grass-free area. Depress clutch, engage PTO and let out the clutch slowly and smoothly. If there is no grass-free area to start off the cutter, then raise it up just above the grass to engage the PTO, and slowly lower the deck down after the blades are spinning. Only when the cutter is fully down in the float position should you spin the blade up to 540 RPM.

Condolences, and happy cutting.

The float label refers to the approximate location for using a MMM. The lift arms will float up at any position (except if they are already raised all the way). As Roy said, you want the finish mower all the way down.

"A lot of universal joints don't like working smoothly over a 25 degree angle"

I've always read that 15° is about the maximum angle a Universal Joint should run at.

Many thanks to you all for the good information and the sentimants.

Todaqy I hope to get the recommended adjustmants made and lube everything. I'll let you know.

Where in Cajun land? I just spent three days in and around LAfayette.
