what's the proper way to check the tranny fluid?

the manual suggests that the engine should be off (for @ least 5 minutes) and on level ground. but it does not say anything about attachments.

should the attachments (in my case, a FEL and BH) be lowered or raised?

Tractor should be off, on level ground, and your loader should be lowered to the ground. On the BH I would just make sure all cylinders are retracted.

EDIT: Also on page 13-4 of the owners manual it says "Park the machine on a flat surface, lower the implement and shut off engine" This is in the right hand column. I think the very left column is how to check the engine oil continued from the previous page, and that is the reason to wait for 5 min.

thanks very much! i've got the right amount of fluid in there now (had a small leak after using the BH for the first time.. just a loose connection).

No problem. You might want to check the level when you take the BH off too. Sometimes when you remove the BH the fluid level can go down some.

I often find that I cannot tell if the little window is completely covered or completely empty - it does not have much of a range. I also don't have any land that could really be called "level"! I know mine is slightly over-filled, and I have to get around to draining some out. Meantime, I use a clean stick to check it.
