And they get better roads, better security, and health care. If we added it all up, we are probably way behind Europe on a lot of issues.

But hey look at the bright side; we get to own all the guns we can afford to buy!

Took a motorhome trip visiting many national parks with some of my Austrian friends... they there were two things that they found unbelievable...

In Durango... there were actually men on horseback and in town with firearms and crop dusting in Nebraska.

The problems with Property Taxes are it is a tax that is often set on the opinion of the Assessor and it is passive as opposed to a percent of wages, earning or spending...

Just a repeat as to what i'm sure I posted before, but my 68 acres and 1,000 sq ft house was under $1,600 for my property tax. Here in Texas, land owners can put there land in a classification that allows them to be taxed at a lower rate. Mine is in Timber, and I have to sell some timber every couple of decades to keep my tax rate, but pay capital gains on the sail of that timber. Others have thier land in cattle or some form of farming to get their tax rate lowered, but also have to pay capital gains on what they raise or grow on their land.

What is really interesting is that if you have your property taxes on anything other then timber, you can convert it into wildlife usage and do two things a year out of a list of a couple dozen things to qualify for the tax rate. Things like mowing trails, digging a pond, planting stuff are all on the list and qualify for the tax break!!!!!!

I bet your taxes would be triple in neighboring WA State...

Here in CT I only have 9 acres, but I was able to put 6 of the 9 into forest service land which yielded a tax savings of about $650 per year or so, if I sell or develop any of it in 10 years I owe all the taxes back on it but I don't plan to do either. In fact, I was able to pay off the mortgage this past weekend so the way I look at it now taxes are about $800/month which is way cheaper then renting a place.
