Pros/cons of tier 4?

I'm still deciding whether or not I like the tier 4 engine yet. From my experience I've already had to replace the blow by filter and am averaging 4L/hr. ( 1 GPH) using the tractor with low to mid workloads and still have low hours on it.

That is not that bad. Idling my 6430 Premium is anywhere from 1-2 L/Hr 1/2 Gallon Low-Mid is about Anywhere 8-16L/Hr 2-4 Gallons/Hr Max load is about 32L/Hr 7 Gallons /Hr

For a 95 PTO HP tractor. I owned a 4240 20 years ago that was rated about 110 PTO HP and dynoed at 120. That used about 7 GPH at full load and they were widely considered to be fuel hogs. Progress?

It will only use 7 GPH when going up 7%-10% Grades on the road. Other than that its usually running at 5.5 GPH

I really can't complain then with my results, going from a 26hp to a 125hp tractor I just about fainted at how much fuel I was using, so it looks like I'm doing a little better than par with other equipment this size. Idling along the computer says I can get 115hrs on a full tank.

Still pathetic as an industry that we are going backwards on fuel use.

Rick
I agree and to think the 4240 has a 466 cid(7.6L) engine and the 6430 has a 276 cid(4.5L) engine but the 4240 out weighs the 6430.

High pressure diesels produce more HP, and use less fuel. They are cleaner, quieter, start easer, and run smother, and don't smoke. They will require more maintenance, with modern lubricants they should out last past diesels easily. HS

Agreed. But they cost so much more, and the fuel does too. The payback against D.I. spark-ignited engines is not what it once was, unless one is running highly loaded for high hours.

The added costs maybe more a devaluation of your currency than real increased production costs. HS
