THAT is solid advice.

#1 - What are you FOR SURE gonna use it for. Make a list.
#2 - Which tractor (any color) will do THAT LIST BEST.
#3 - BUY THAT tractor

'Nuff said.

Solid advice BigBull338.

I would second Baby Grand's last paragraph about dealer support. In the HP range you are looking at, my opinion is all the major brands have good CUTs. For me a big part of the equation is support that will last the life of the tractor.

I am a homeowner and I am looking to buy my first tractor. I know nothing about tractors and I married into a farming family. Ofcourse they have large john Deere tractors and suggest that I buy a smaller one of those but wow the prices I have seen are crazy. I guess the old saying is true if your going to drive something that is the color of money you better have a lot of it. I am looking for a 4x4, 35-40 HP with a loader any suggestions?

I would recommend you consider a Deere 4x20 series tractor, good power range for cat 1 implements, good ground clearance and stability decent loader capacity and the ehydro transmission is great for loader work. I have a 4520 cab tractor I am very satisfied with.

Keep peace in the family and save yourself a lot of grief in the long haul. Take their advice. They probably know what they are talking about. I would say this same thing if they were steering you to a NH, Kubota, etc.

If they have a lot of JD in the family they probably ave a good relationship with a dealer or dealers. That can help in the unlikely event you have a problem with your JD.

And it will avoid issues when you do inevitably have problems with the other brand you buy. :) you know, the 'well, we told you....'

So just relax, get their input and enjoy your new JD!

I would be more inclined to agree if they offered to pay the price differential.

Well today I went to the local john Deere dealership and I'm not sure if I was given a good deal today or not. I went and looked at a jd 4005 with a front end loader. While the salesman and I were talking he realized that this is my first so he decided to turn it into a package deal. He included a 5" cutter, 5" box blade, a 5" scrape blade for front and have it delivered for 25k. Again this is the first tractor I have looked at is it a good deal or do I need to walk away?

And I would Third that. I live 5 minutes from my dealer and couldn't tell you how may times I've ran over for a stupid $4 part at 11:45 on a Saturday that has saved my weekend from being a waste. It's worth a lot being close by.

Not knowing where you are located it's difficult to say. Prices can differ in areas.

Just for general comp you can check Fosters, they are a big package dealer in Texas. Here's one deal they are advertising for $27,298.

Tractor Package 4105 includes:

4105 Tractor
John Deere 300 CX Loader
Insulated Canopy
6' Box Blade (with scarifiers)
6' Rotary Cutter (with Slip Clutch & Front Shields)
Post Hole Digger (with 9" Auger)
20' Trailer (Brakes, Ramps, Ramp Racks, Diamond Plate* Fenders, Tube Top Rail, Bulldog Hitch)

Foster's Tractor Packages

Just an FYI - it will usually be easier for the people in your area to help with recommendations if they know where you are located. At least generally.
