How is throwing a toy bad behavior. I live in 20 acres of brush and trees. Im simply asking for some ideas, not criticism. For some reason anytime someone ask for an opinion on this site, people jump in and criticize. Im getting tired of it myself. It ok for a hunting dog to run thru brush and retrieve a bird, but not to play. Get real.

+1.....

Throwing a toy isnt a problem, where you choose to throw it is. Labs dont have a reputation of being overly clever. Stuff happens, I get it, thats life. But if I throw toys off cliffs and start asking the internet on where I can buy parachutes to save my dog then Im not doing my job as a dog owner. Do you leave loaded guns around with no safeties? Some people do, and unfortunately sometimes kids find them.

I've been chasing birds with dogs for more than 20 years and I would never run any type of vest in the woods. Open fields and water but never heavy brush or woods. I've seen dogs get hung up with branches that get under the vest and the dogs struggle to get free. I also don't run collars for the same reason unless they are tight and high up on the neck. Hunting dogs are hard charging breeds and **** happens

I had one dog come down on an old piece of farm equipment that was half buried and he cut one of his pads in half. That took six months to heal and I had to yell at him every time he tried to run while in the yard which was every time he went outside. Another dog was swimming to the bank when a snapper got a hold of him and tore up his leg just above the foot. The $300 vet bill wan't the worse of it. To this day 3 years later he's not afraid of the water but he doesn't like any water that has a steep edge. Duck hunting is a problem now

I would have to think that it would be a freak accident for a dog to get cut bad enough to need stitches just by running thru the brush, we run packs of hounds down here in the south in stuff you can't walk thru and I have never had one cut so bad to need stitches from brush, hogs yes, but not brush. Has this ever happened to this dog before?

My dog took off chasing a hog through mesquite and barbed wire fence and came back with a similar cut really a flap of skin hanging on her chest, took 23 stitches. She couldn't tell us if it was the fence or mesquite thorn or hog that ripped her. I have seen the type of vest for these injuries on YouTube - hog hunting with dogs. The vest is made to stop the goring of the wild hog tusk.

I don't hog hunt anymore since my dad passed, I only run hounds on deer, but we sewed dogs up for years until we figured out how much easier stapling them was as long as it wasn't really bad, actually still have a couple vests that we ordered from a dog supply store and one my old daddy made at the saddle shop, they can be the difference between a dog making it or not.

We have a dog (not a lab, a kelpie blue H mix) that goes through the brush at high speed seemingly all of the time. Yes, he gets scratched and cut and same as you, we thought about getting him some vest to help lessen that damage. He's 2.5yo now but when he was a pup, my spouse would look at his belly and legs and see them all scratched/cut up and ask "how does he do that?!?!". Then we see hin go air-born into a thorn patch chasing after a chipmunk. We didn't throw the chipmunk in it. How does he get scratched and cut up?

That filson one looks just like what i was thinking... bottom protection without full coverage so as not to overheat. Thanks

I'm actually surprised that the filson vest for the dog was so cheap.

I have some of their tin cloth clothing for working in heavy brush (it really is bombproof IMO), along with a wool coat from them when I lived up north. My first filson leather wallet actually lasted me about 15 years which in the past, most others wouldn't hold up to after a couple of years use (they wouldn't warranty the first wallet though because it just kind of wore out in the stitching over time, but thought so much of it, I spent the money on another one).

Generally Filson is expensive, but it's one of those things that you get what you pay for IMO. Point being, don't think you can go wrong if it comes from Filson.
