Mrs.tiller and I enjoy an honorific sent our way and we freely give them out.

It's a polite and respectful way to greet someone.

Yes Sir it is.

To me, if someone is just "going through the motions" absent intent, it is meaningless. Being forced to comply through threat of physical force or social pressure doesn't seem to track well with what this country stands. I dislike hypocrisy and I am very particular with whom I associate, the better I know a person, the more appropriate my decisions.

Just remember you are saluting the rank and position not the man/woman. Without protocol, traditions, courtesies, and the discipline that comes with it you have nothing but a mob. Witness what is happening on our streets today.

I was both enlisted and officer over 33 years. I treated my men with the same courtesy I expected from them.

For those reasons I am still a proponent of the draft and universal government service.

Many on the left agree with the right as being for the draft for gov’t service of some type.
I agree when they say it would lessen our eagerness for foreign “adventures” if everybody has a stake in the killing and getting killed business they’re in; versus the army we have today, which comes from a soldier class, where it’s very likely another member of their family served, or from someone needing a way to pay for their education.
Citizens would be more involved in what America’s foreign policy and military is actually doing.

I ain't salutin' nuthin'!!!!

I hate the whole caste system. Doctor so-and-so, Mr. Speaker, Madam Chairperson, 'Your Honor' .......

To me we're all Bob or Carol or Ted or Alice. No one is above anyone else.

Respect is an amazing thing; once given it binds you to the other, and if earned them to you. Sounds like you missed out on that experience.

Well if you where watching an event when I was present and did not stand, remove your cover, and place your hand over your heart, or present arms when the National Anthem was being sung you would hear from me, "get your hat off" and after it was over I would tell you what an *** you where.
Done it more then once.
As far as I am concerned if you can not stand and honor the flag of this great nation get the heck out, and don't let the door hit your butt on the way out.

And that is probably how sieg heil started out as well.

I came of age just after Vietnam, and am one of only a few males in the US today who wasn't required to register for the draft. My friends who enlisted did and saw things which I never will. If I could do it over again I would have signed up just to get my *** out of Dodge for a while.

Not everybody is fit for military service. Based on my observation from college vets I work with, I don't think that we should be sending kids overseas to fight in wars which have been going on since Biblical times; there should be a minimum age requirement higher than what we have now. Yet I also believe that everybody should be required to give a few years to their country after HS; if not military, than Peace Corps or AmeriCorps... there are a lot of regions in this country which are really hurting.

Conscription and forced labor is for Dictatorships, Monarchies, and Third World Banana Republics, of which we are none. I wouldn't even permit High Schools to require Volunteer Hours to get a Diploma like some do.

You say that like you would be in a position of power. Since in your world, everyone's equal, please explain how you would not permit volunteer hours.

Now there ya go, applying logic to illogical behavior. ;) ;)

Voluntary volunteering is not the same as High Schools requiring it for graduation and a diploma.
