WOW...what spelling!! That'll teach me not to type so early in the am! Didn't I read somewhere in here where some mods were done to compensate for the sesnititvity of the treadles? The grass cut seems to be better with the throttle wide open(faster PTO drive right?)....but I don't want to travel so fast..it's hard to keep the treadle mid way for the right travel speed. Wondering if those that have tried their home-made mods to the treadle how they have worked oout for them?

Search for "toy's" response near the end of the thread, using 2x6's cut to size.
In the same thread "Fourteen" shows his method of dealing with the treadle problem using stretch cords.
On my new PT425 (May 7, 2004), I use the 2x6's and it works great for me.

Yep, it was missing. I think Moss said his was missing too. I think the factory removes it after greasing because the cover doesn't fit well when the fitting is in place.
I install one when I grease, then remove it. I think Moss said he put an angled fitting in his. Ours is due for greasing, I think I'll try Moss's solution.

Yep, mine was missing, too. I went to the auto store and bought a box of assorted grease zerks and found the one that fit the best. The whole box was under $5.00. Works great.

Just give operation of the machine a little time. After a while you can operate at any speed you like without even thinking about it. I use the treadle as shipped without any mods. Seems fine to me. Have fun with your new PT.

Grinding a 1/2" notch into the center of the front edge of the horizontal cover plate will allow the grease zerk to be permanently installed!!

I happily used an axe for years until I discovered the chainsaw!!! The OEM treadle is OK, but the treadle with stretch cords is better and safer!!
The pedals are easier to modulate even on uneven ground. The foot can now rest on the treadle without reaction until further pressure is applied to move the PT. The danger of inadvertently touching the treadle resulting in sudden unexpected PT movement is greatly reduced. The feel of the treadle under the foot is similar to that of an accelerator, and therefore is much easier for a new operator to use safely.

I think I'll give it a try......seems to be the solution for me since I prefer to have the throttle near wide open for a better cut but don't want to fly around the yard with it...too many grades to cover at that speed! Going to take the teeth off Sunday to try and grrom the run off area along our lane...better do something since with all this rain we're getting or the lane will wash out soon!

Maybe we can get inputs from other owners that have installed the rubber treadle dampers and from owners who have not. Maybe if I made the mod I might like it. When I operate both feet are on the treadles all the time so I have instant access to forward and reverse. I mow with my machine down hill towards my creek about a 25 degree slope. When I get to the point I want to stop mowing I have to back up. When you operate under these conditions you must be ready to engage the parking break immediately in case you stall the machine. If you don't put the break on you will have a great surprise. Don't ask how I know. I say this because I use the reverse as a break mowing down hill and any pressure I need on the treadle to balance it I supply with the opposite foot of the way the machine is moving. This makes the treadle stable and the speed of the machine stable works for me does any body else operate in a similar way.

Yes, going real slow on real steep stuff, I apply opposite pedal.
I suspect that machines with the high torque wheel motors (those roughly one year old and newer) have less hydraulic braking that those with the old style motors. Ours will roll by itself on just about any slope, even with the motor off.

I stalled mine the first time I was cutting...but I was going up a fair grade and after I stalled I realized I didn't have the throttle open all the way, put on the brake before re-starting and had a hell of a time getting the brake off again!...actually the Robin owners manual says to not give full throttle when climbing a grade or you might stall. I'll experiment with it some as I have only used it 1 day so far due to the rain here lately...may try the 2 foot approach too until I get around to any type of mod I may try. Teet are coming off the bucket Sunday as I try to groom the drainage/runoff ditch down our 1/4 mile lane and yet more grass to mow...will the fun never end! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
