I bet the wiring diagram on the new YT series would make your head explode. Then again it might be pretty simple.... everything just going in and out of a big central 'brain'. Then there is that i-HMT transmission! It looks like it would require a PHD to troubleshoot. Just think about what would be required to make that system all work. Sitting in the tractor you can turn a knob to increase engine speed without effecting travel speed. Likewise, you can flip a switch and turn the same knob to change travel speed without effecting engine speed. You can also push a button and return to one of two pre-set engine/travel speed parameters. I can see several instances where that technology would be nice to have but when it quits working is not one of them.

I agree, And sooner ,or later it will quit working. They always do. I can see this particular toro guy scratching his head, not knowing where to turn. It would be more that just trying to explain what a grapple is.:D

My brother just purchased a new o-turn and curious how a new motor blew up!! He doesn't even try to keep up with my FM. setup esp. in tall grass. Same Hp.. Did you push that Kabooma a little to hard there??...

Wish I knew. I was riding along cutting grass when the engine began to bog down. I turn the ignition off, got off raised the hood. The paint on the motor was baking. I looked at the coolant jug ,and there was no coolant .
For some reason , the head gasket blew and blew all the coolant out the rear exhaust.

No issue since the new engine was installed.

I just brought this us because mechanical things do break at some point. When I buy a new tractor, I want to make sure the dealer will be able to handle those types of issues. I just didn't get that from the guy selling yanmar tractors

I bet that Yanmar is set up with a mobile service. With Vans that are setup with all the new computer diagnosing equipment and almost a machine shop. And with the new Technology it doesn't take much for them to trouble shoot a problem. Same as a new car computer. So you just don't need a full shop to work on it. When I was at a JD dealer not long ago it was setup the same way. Shop full of old Tractors. But all the newer units like the one I was picking up was in another corner of the shop. Were the mobile guy was backed into.

I much prefer the older tractors like the YMs - and at least part of that is because I can understand how they work. It makes me comfortable knowing that any repair is going to involve wrenches. And that "Hi tech" diagnosis means pressure gauges and VOMs. Those I can handle.

But I also know that I'm a dinosaur and that the future is going - has already gone - towards tractors that call for their own mobile service and feature computer programmed engine parameters. There's also a sneaky suspicion that the new ones are in fact very are decent tractors in spite of all that.

That's fine by me. I'll stick with the YMs. In my book they are modern enough. And it's nice that Yanmar made them to last. Later this year I'll be looking for the perfect YM187d, it being the tractor that I couldn't afford back when they were new. I've already found 187 books and brochure, just haven't found the actual tractor yet.
But it's out there...and probably in decent shape as well.

These modern tractors ....I'm talking logging skidders can be trouble. I have guys that had the dealer out. There stumped and ends up being a computer....that still doesn't totally fix it. Same crew j heard them talking to the shop Forman at JD the forestry shop. He was asking what the code was. They told him, he said can't be that code does not exist. But I was standing right there as the guy was reading the codes off the dash display, and he does not wear glasses or have trouble seeing so I doubt he read it wrong. What do you do then?

I agree, YM187D was the pinnacle of design for a small tractor. I love my YM186D but I can see where an improved model would be even better. The general design couldn't be improved but broader tires and more legroom for the operator are things I could use. That said, I personally can't justify paying the premium, several thousand $, to step up when what I have now serves my needs.

I think the only solution is to recognize running modern equipment is far more costly. So when you buy the unit, also contract for a 4 hour delivery loaner and a long warranty along with your purchase. Or just lease, with these same terms.

Replace the unit when you can no longer get this warranty coverage. Expensive, yes, but crew down time is costly too, or you might even lose a season of logging if the skidder is unfixable. I don't think there is a solution aside from costly backup insurance.

Thats why anyone who has been at it for more than a few years has a backup of everything at the house. Missing a day of work around here for an average crew they loose about $6000/day gross. So your talking about $600/hr gross income off an hour of work.

LOL you must have read one of my other post. Where I stated a friend up the road had the massey tech out for a code. The code that the tech was reading from the computer didn't exist per massey tech support !

Since moving to the farm, I need a littler larger tractor with a little larger lift capacity . I'm going to look for a 3-4 yr old used unit in the 50-60 hp range with a lift capacity of around 2500# or so
