I have an old pear tree that is almost 100 years old that I was considering pruning. Would this damage it considering its age? It still puts out good fruit every year but has never had any attention as far as pruning. It overloads often and limbs break. Should I just leave it alone?

Before pruning an old gem like that, I would consult an arborist. Or, check to see if your state University has an agriculture extension in your area. In Calif, we have Master Gardener programs through the local University of California extension office. They answer questions just like your, and even give demonstrations.

i would be really carefull about prunig an old tree, you would need to go slowly maybe taking 10 years to get the tree in shape, maybe you should just thin out the fruit when it starts to grow in the sping and forget the prunig.

Pruning a pear tree can be very tricky as older ones when pruned can get shoots off of them that end up breaking off under pressure. "Weight of fuit\Wind"

We have a very old pear tree that loses branches, too, due to to much fruit. You can thin the fruit and this will help treemendously. I also try to trim the suckers off the branches, as they tend to develop weak branches. Lots of work, but worth it. Mmmm... pear cobler anyone? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
