PT 1430 Hydraulic Trouble

I can tell you that ALL hydrostatic tractors have sluggish hydraulics on cold days at start up. The only way to get around it is to pre-heat the hydraulic fluid when it is cold outside.

Even the most expensive machine needs warm up time.

Probably the best thing you can if your looking for a oil that will work year round is to pick a viscosity that will work well at the highest operating temp you will see in the dead of summer and still has good cold weather characteristics in the winter "after" a normal warm up phase.

Has anyone actually measured the temperature of the hydraulic system in the dead heat of summer and if so what was it? I see lot's of post that say they run hot but I can't say I have ever seen one that actually states the temp.

I have a temp. gauge sensing the temperature in the middle of the hydraulic tank on my 425. I have never mowed long enough to reach equilibrium. My best guess is 100 F or better above ambient temp.

i will see if disconnecting the cable and manually moving the lever on the trans improves the performance. I assume if it does, the cable needs to be replaced.

Just curious if you've fixed your problem or what you're trying?

thanks for asking.

I have not had the time to check out the machine. I am still using it often. As I said earlier, I did replace the swivel linkage to the treadle but little else.

I believe I will order a new cable but I do not understand how to adjust the hydroback device. I did replace the hydraulic fluid due to the small floating particles I found in the tank.

How many hours are on your tractor? Just curious...

I replaced the fluid in mine at somewhere between 250 and 275 hours (I have it written in the Owner's Manual but can't recall).

It had some small particles in it also. It also smelled just slightly burned. I'm beginning to think that with the stock filtration system, that we should certainly plan on replacing the fluid on a regular basis -- I'm just not sure what that interval should be.

Just curious, has anyone done a UOA on their hydraulic fluid when it get's to the slightly burned smell point. I'm curious to hear what has actually happend to the oil. Oxidized, sheared down, high nitration....

In another post you stated that you had a thermowell down into your hydraulic tank. Any pictures? Is it a drywell that puts the sensor down into the middle of the tank? I am working on hooking up temperature gauges right now, and am interested in seeing how you installed your sensor.

I used a section of stainless steel tubing. Crimped the end and silver soldered to make oil tight. Drilled a hole the size of the tubing in a brass male pipe plug and silver soldered the tubing to the plug to form a dry well. Drilled and tapped the tank cover. There should be some pictures in a thread a while back.
