Looking for a new tractor to buy in Q1 2005. Went the usual route and started looking at CUTs and SCUTs. Always came down to poor turning radius which just wouldn't work in my yard. Attachments seem over the top expensive, too.

Then, I found this site and the PT series. I think the PT's will work great for my yard, and I have read a zillion posts here to get well informed. You guys are having too much fun with your machines... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Now I have a nagging question... Obviously the 425 is a great machine for a wide variety of tasks, but how come nobody has the 2425? When I look at many of the lifting/digging/PT pucker issues people have had, it seems a little more weight, like the 2425 has, would make a big difference in the lift capacity. Also, I looked closely at where the main lift pivot is on the 2425 and it is substantially behind the front wheel compared to the 425 and that alone would seem to seriously reduce the pucker-potential.

I only have a one acre yard with about 50 mature trees and gardens to mow around, but I have lots of local neighbors with bigger 3+ acre properties and neighborly type jobs that can keep a worthy tractor busy. I have drain tile to install (at 42" depth), decks that need posts dug, lots of large tree maintenance (can you say grapple bucket), a 250 foot drainage ditch to keep cleaned out, a 200 foot fence to install, seasonal snow maintenance, and that's just to get started.

The 2425 attracts me more than the 425 because the higher seat would seem to give better visibility, I like the 7' lift potential, and I only need the 48" mower to provide agile clearance among the trees. The 2425 is 7" shorter. I like the fact a more capable backhoe can be attached and removed easily, though I would only use the minihoe at first due to costs.

Downsides I see to the 2425 are the obvious cost, higher center of gravity and overall height. Possibly the seat being in the rear of the tractor may feel strange at first? The pictures don't show it but the 2425 has ROPS canopy, right?

Other concerns - is the 2425 as easy to service as the 425? Does the seat really get hot due to being above the engine?

Look forward to your feedback,

Steve in Michigan

Wow I never heard of someone in your situation wanting the 2425. If you get the 2425 I am afraid you will wish you had gotten the 425. If you get the 425 I don’t think you will be wishing for the 2425. In other words if you get the 2425 you might want to try both it and the 425 out extensively. Be sure before getting the 2425! I can’t even imagine how it would be on slopes.

Welcome to TBN!

I chose the PT425 because my main usage is mowing. I wanted a lawn mower that could do other things, too. Man, can it do other things! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The 2425 seems more like a contractor type machine, to me. I would not want to use it for mowing or brush hogging. It is too tall and I wanted to sit down low. Never drove one, though, so take that for what it's worth. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

No ROPS on the 2425. As already mentioned, this is a digging machine not well suited for mowing.
Welcome to TBN, what ever machine you get the PowerTrac family is here to help you and have fun.

" reduce the pucker-potential "

Pucker on a PT-425 is like fishtailing in your car on snow. Each Winter the first few times it happens, it really gets your attention, but by Spring you can drive down the road with your rearend swinging like a salmon going to spawn, and think nothing of it!!

Pucker is just something that happens to let you know that you are overloading your PT, rather than having expensive parts bend, break, or blow!! One of my first fears when I got my PT-425 was "Gee, what will I break if I try to lift my SUV??!!"! Answer, nothing!! I just get a little pucker!!

$2,500 MORE, WOW!!!!
Apparently the PT-2425 was designed for small contractors who would otherwise have to buy a big backhoe/loader tractor for digging. Unless you plan to dig a lot of basements or septic tank holes, the PT-425 with a MiniHoe, Potato Digger, and Bucket should easily handle any residential digging!! You certainly would not want a MiniHoe AND a Back Hoe!!

So what!! The PT-425 and the PT-2425 have the same rated lift capacity!!
I have never needed to lift anything over 6'! If I did, I would quickly build a 1' step!
If it weighs more than 800#, I make 2 trips!

There are way more advantages to having a short PT than a tall one!!
Stay away from ditches!! No ROPS!
"Watch out for that tree limb!!" No ROPS!

"The sun is really hot today!!" No ROPS!
"It's starting to rain or snow!!" No ROPS!

Get the Grapple Bucket!! Its great for tree maintenance!! You get a free 5 cf Dirt Bucket with Rock Teeth worth $440!!

But it's your money!! Get the PT-425 /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

There is guy in Howell, MI that has the 2425. You will have to sift through the post to find him or maybe PT will provide you with the name and number. If your close enough and he's willing to let you try you can see for your self.

If he's in Howell he's only 10 minutes from me. That would be excellent.

I've tried the TBN search functions and when you put in things like 2425 it doesn't find all the posts for some reason...

Welcome to TBN! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

In conducting your searches, make sure that you are selecting the Power Trac forum to search in, and that in the Date Range drop down window, you're selecting All Posts at the bottom of the window. If you don't do that, you'll only be searching for posts that are newer than 1 week.

I just tried it with a search for the 2425, and there were multiple pages of posts to review. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
