OK, never mind. Finally had the sense to look at the PT-2425 photos which clearly show the bar tires. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I can't seem to find it by the search engine, could you post a link?

About those tires -

I have 23x10.5x12s on my JD318 - I think bars have superior traction on any rough or uneven ground. I have also run over a LOT of branches and rocks, which I believe would shred most regular turf tires. For mowing and 'over the lawn' work, the turfs would be terrific. For any serious 'field' work, I think you'll like bars better - just my opinion.

Mark Chalkley's post

From there, click on his link to Michelin info. It will go to the xm37, I think. Then, there is a listing of tread patterns on that site that will get you to the slightly lighter duty xm27.

Here's a pic from a previous discussion of turf vs bar. Maybe PT might be open to a compromise. The tire is a Firestone G2. I've seen them on some New Holland CUT's Anyway they are more open and have deeper lugs. Firestone calls them turf & field G2's

I have R4s on my Branson, and I am satisfied with them. I wish an equivalent was available on the PT.

Right now, we have no traction issues with our lawn tractor mowing the Xmas tree area, but we do when we mow the "swamp." I'm sure a PT with turfs would handle that spot without a problem, though. It is some of the future Xmas tree areas that I am concerned about, since we will have a fair bit of slope to deal with once those are planted. Up 'till then, they get mowed with the Branson.

We'll just have to decide in the next couple of weeks.

Rob:
When I went to Power Trac to buy mine, I had resolved to get bar treads for exactly the reasons you state. Terry Estep at Power Trac talked me into turfs, saying they were better all around tires for most purposes. Since I spend a lot of time pasture mowing, I decided to try them. So long as I keep the pressures at about 10 psi, they have superb traction. I have done some work in the woods, clearing along rough fence lines, climbed over rubble, etc. as well as mowing, with only one puncture that Slime couldn't handle in 170 or so hours. They certainly aren't as tough as XM37 Michelins, but they are a lot tougher and give better traction than I expected. As noted earlier, John Coxon - Sedgewood - has had a puncture or two on the bar treads. I think unless you go to the industrial loader type stuff, the puncture resistance difference may not be much.
But, unless you're mowing golf-green quality lawns, I suspect bar treads will work as well as turfs in most jobs, so it comes down to personal preference.

Michelin doesn't seem to make a tire in the PT-425's size--unless I'm doing something wrong on their site.

I never checked sizes, since I'm not seriously in the market for much heavier tires, but thought of the Michelin tires because Mark has touted them recently as well as a while back. You are probably right that the sizes of the XM27 and XM37 won't fit. There should be some industrial skid steer type tires out there somewhere, however, if you need really bulletproof stuff.
Anyone?

Yeah, the bar tires are 4 ply and quite thin - I put a sharp stone through one while box blading. Slime has fixed all the little punctures - thorns and such.

The bars don't tear up a lawn if you don't get too crazy. At this point I think I would still go with the bar treads for my purposes if I had it to do over- I tend to get in a lot of mud and haven't been able to stick it so bad I couldn't get out, as I think Charlie has, in horse doo doo of all things, with his turfs. If it weren't for the mud I'd probably do turfs next time.
