higher MTBF (Mean time before failure) I always thought things were designed for mean time BETWEEN failures /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif.

Re: PT 60

Actually, this question of a clutch should not be that difficult to surmount. When I was a kid, my father had a Merry Built tiller with a belt. The belt was always loose when the tiller was “out of gear.” However, to engage the tiller, I would move a lever which, in turn, pressed a pulley against the belt creating enough tension for the belt to turn the tiller. My old riding lawn mower had a similar set up, as I assume do most belt driven devices. I can’t imagine it would be that hard to fabricate a similar set up.

Keep us posted on your progress. I want to do the same thing.

Re: PT 60

will do .... but for the next week it looks like there is only greasing and operating weather here in the midatlantic states .... the temperature has taken a nose dive. our r&d shop is partially open ... a former cow barn with lots of openings. get the picture?

Re: PT 60

they powered the 60 inch finish mower and run into problems not having a clutch to engage the belt which powers the blades

Hans,
Several years ago I had a similar situation...I found an old Woods self powered 60 in mower w/ a Briggs 11hp vert shaft...
It had a centrifugal clutch that was dragging...the blades would turn while attempting to PULL start...all that inertia was holding down my "cranking" speed making this thing a bear to start...

A cheap fix was a fixed engine pulley(from Farm & Fleet) and (here's the good part) a 5/16" diam rod attached to the spring loaded belt tensioner in a way that it could be extended through a key-hole type opening in the belt housing and the notch in the rod would "latch" up on the narrowing keyhole opening on the housing...one would pull the rod, thereby releasing tension on belt and "latch" it on the edge of the belt housing...
...or...there is that "expensive" centrifugal clutch...

that too. In my job we aren't allowed to have a failure during the life of a unit, so only the first one matters/w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

So you guys only make new ones and don't have to worry about replacement parts?/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Re: PT 60

thanks for the imput, will take this suggestion into consideration, when the weather get's a little bit warmer and we can work in our r/d area again.
