Oil & Fuel PT422 Fuel Line Rubbed by Front Engine Coupling

Pequeajim,

I think your PT is slightly newer than mine, and may indeed have fuel-rated tubing. The tubing on mine was clear, water-white tubing. It appeared to be a generic PVC.

The Tygon tubing which is specifically gas/diesel rated is dyed a yellow translucent color by the mfr. We used it in my lab for certain hydrocarbon solvents. {HERE} and {HERE}

The company that makes Tygon brand tubing has a whole array of formulations, from medical tubing we use in the OR, lab tubing and industrial. {HERE} The "tygon" name by itself is only a brand. It does not imply a fuel rating, nor the actual polymer composition of the tubing. We actually were clued-in to the specific Tygon gasoline line by a lab worker who worked down the hall and flew RC planes. He recommended a tubing called Du-bro (?) Tygon which is indeed the yellow translucent fuel-rated stuff.

I'm curious to know if indeed your PT came with the yellow fuel-rated Tygon. That would certainly be a safety improvement. Notwithstanding, IMHO, the thick-walled reinforced fuel/vapor tubing seems to be better suited to the high operating temps at least in the tub of my own 425.

Hey tracdoc:

I ran out to take a peek and the tubing is yellow tygon. In fact, it is the flexible kind which is the same stuff that I use on my gasoline powered airplanes. Tygon also makes the less flexible version, which for me has not held up as long.

I apologize for not having the specs with me. Looking at the tubing, it seems to be routed in a logical way to minimize rubbing against anything.

I will try to take a picture later and post it.

Jim!

One last comment. I had a wise friend once say that most problems in life are caused by fluid flow and leakage issues. Some examples are: flat tires, heart attacks, strokes, cooling system leaks, fuel line leaks etc. You probably can control the worst consequences of leaks by simple periodic inspection.

Thanks for all the replies to the thread.
