jol1269 :

Thanks for the note about the PTO.

Terry did in fact call me.

He seems anxious to have me replace the PTO valve as soon as possible and return the old one.

I explained that the tractor is many miles from my garage (at a property of ours in the mountains) and that I would get to it when I get to it.

Seems he thinks I should do the replacement immediately.

Oh well, too late to have second thoughts. My $$$ are gone, the tractor barely runs (see jetting comments), and I have no way to move it without incurring a lot of expense to rent a truck and trailer.

I've already spent nearly $1000 and two days of my time getting the thing to Colorado and then to our property.

Dirt moved to date has therefore costs about a dollar per pound for moving.

Maybe FEDex would be cheaper? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( Sorry if I offended you, but then if you bought a new car from me for $15,000 and it wouldn't start or run, I'm sure you be delighted for me to tell you that it's your problem.

Silly me - - I thought when you buy something with an engine in it that it should run.

The good news (for you) is that it's a Kohler, not a Robin engine.

You did not offend me in any way, I just asked a question in the polite way.
All I am saying that the high altitude conversion is not a warranty item, warranty is mainly targeted at defective material and/or workmanship and I believe in your case this engine works at the lower altitude with no problem.

I wish I could help you getting your money back for the conversion since you've had a bad luck with this dealer, but unfortunately you do not own a Robin engine so I can't help.

( Just finished about 2 hrs. of work in the foothills of Larkspur, CO, and my new PT425 (7 hrs.) is sputtering and stalling. )

Check to see if it is a fuel problem first. About four hours after I put the Kohler back into our PT, I had the same problem. I noticed bubbles in the fuel line. I traced them to tank vibrations.

The tank mounts had shifted slightly, and the tank was just touching the engine hood when it was down. I pushed the tank back slightly and really tightened the tank mounting bracket's mounting bolts (NOT the tank mounting bolts). That seems to have taken care of the problem.

BTW, considering that Kohlers and other small engines are now jetted notoriously lean due to EPA rules, I would consider high altitude richening a blessing in disguise. If the plugs don't show fouling, why change?
