I've read through various part of the forum that indicates PT is not exactly the most quiet machine on the market. I don't expect it to be quiet, but what will the neighbors think of me on a weekend morning? I'm comparing to a BX2230, a MF GC2300, and a NH TZ24D (least noisy). Can anyone give me a sense of this without a trip to Tazewell? Thanks

You know, I almost purchased a BX2200 - I would have purchased one but they didn't have it in stock - only the demo. In my opinion, there are NO quiet tractors, but the PT425 isn't terribly noisy - the only thing making noise is the Kohler twin. If you really want a sense of how noisy it is, just pick any piece of equipment with the same engine. Sure, there's a custom muffler and a cooling fan, but nothing else makes as much noise as the Kohler.

In my view, the PT425 is pretty respectable in terms of noise. It certainly makes LESS noise than my JD318, which is a MUCH smaller machine!

I don't think you'll have a problem.

Like Smartguyz said, it is no more noisy than anything else with the same Kohler engine. I always wear hearing protection. The added noise comes from the hydraulics. There is a distinctive whine from the juice being pumped all the time. When you turn on the PTO, the engine picks up quite a bit of power and becomes much louder. Plus there is the noise from the mower deck, but all mower decks give off noise.

Try to listen to the sound in the videos on my homepage. You can hear the sounds I describe. Have you seen those vides?

Noise will be relative to throttle setting. I mow the lawn with lower throttle than I do when using the mini hoe.
I also use hearing protection but did also when walking behind the rotary mower. I do not feel it is bad.
I did contact my neighbors who work midnights and sleep days as to whether the 425 was keeping them awake. They both said it was no louder than normal daytime noise and not to be concerned.

The noise is about the same as any other maching their size. We have not had any complants about using our machines around others homes at all hours doing various jobs.

Since this is an air-cooled engine that might not be a good strategy. The lower the throttle, the slower the fan speed, the less cooling. You should probably be running this at full throttle whenever you're doing any work, which loads down the engine.

Would be nice if they added a liquid cooled engine to the lineup.

As to noise, I agree with MR and Paul, you gotta wear some decent hearing protection. The best kinds are the plugs for your ears but the more comfortable kind (in my opinion) are the huge ones that fit over your ears. I also wear eye protection when I mow the lawn with my lawn tractor as you can never anticipate something ugly being thrown back at you. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I guess I'm just used to using a lot of power equipment and heavy equipment so it's not a big deal for me. But none of the neighbors seem to use any protection. I can never figure that out. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
