PT425 Trailer to pull, NOT to Haul the PT

Thanks, Bill. I ended up going ahead and pulling the trigger on one of these:

Country Manufacturing 1 Ton Tandem Trailer

There's quite a bit of discussion about their 2 ton trailers here, but not the 1 ton version.

I have a lot of mulch to deal with, and I wanted something a little bigger and sturdier than the Agrifab sized ones. I have a 1/2 ton dump trailer for my Simplicity machines but they won't hold but about 20 cu ft.

I didn't want the 4-wheeled wagon because I can't back one up worth beans -- tried unsuccessfully many times on the farm. These tandems also appear to have a pretty low center of gravity (16x8.50x8 tires) for using on my hillsides, given their size...

I ended up getting one of these for a bit less (delivered) than I could've gotten a PT light-material bucket. So, I'll try to "make do" with my grapple bucket and this trailer to move mulch around.

I'm thinking of perhaps putting some kind of temporary webbing between the "fingers" on my grapple bucket, so I can bite a huge mouthfull of mulch...

Bill,

Having had an Agri-Fab cart I can tell you they are pretty flimsy and will likely fail well before its rated capacity. For grass clippings & leaves it may be fine however.

At the other end of the spectrum, King Kutter model 1.5T-DT-XB is a pretty serious unit with hand pump hyd dump and two-way tailgate. Rated 3000 lbs GVW. Around $16 -1800. Farm equipment dealers carry this line.

Hi KenT, Glad to hear you found what you need. My reply about the steerable cart was more to Mark but afterwards I re-read the original post and it looks like he already found units that fit his needs he is just looking for some feedback on pulling w/ a 425 and I can't provide any feedback there. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Great feedback Rip! I have been contemplating a cart of some type and the Agri-Fab seemed to be a decent alternative to the smaller Craftsman units I have been looking at. Sounds like I may stay away from the Agri-fab then. I had been looking at this Craftsman 10 Cu Ft Dump on sale for $99. It's an all plastic bed w/ 650 lb capacity.

Since the 180's capacity is 600 lbs and the LMB is 7 cu ft. It would hold just a little more than what I could lift or about 1 and a half buckets full of lighter material.. Still debating on how useful that would be to me... for my typical short distances it probably makes more sense to put the money else where and just make more trips with the LMB. The real value add to me may be having the cart available when the mower or tiller is attached. Oh, and then there's that pesky lil' voice in my head that says "you can never have too many attachments." /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

That Craftsman unit looks like it would be fine for a number of applications.

I perhaps should not have been too down on the ArgiFab models as they would probably be fine for most light duty tasks such as leaves & grass clippings, mulch, small tree branches and even a few sacks of fertilizer.

Full loads of dirt, rocks, firewood, etc is where they will not come close to living up to their advertized load capacity. This may apply to many other brands of light duty garden carts as well.

So for many light duty garden tasks these may well serve the purpose at low cost if you mentally cut their rated weight capacity by half or so. For heavier tasks some of the light duty "farm" carts & wagons may be better suited, and even then one perhaps should regard the weight ratings somewhat sceptically.

In the size and type catagory, that King Kutter tandem axle dump cart I mentioned above seems to be pretty solid. May be more than some of the green PTs need, but would be a good addition for any of the red machines.
