Maybe a dumb question but....
I have had my JD 955 for 4 years and only used a finish mower on my pto. No problem since the gears were always aligned when I removed it and put it back on. Now I have a broadcast spreader and interchange the 2. Usually I have been able to line up the pto on the tractor with the implement drive without much problem. However, yesterday I struggled with it for 45 min., bent over in an awkward postion, engaging the pto, trying again, looking at it again, swearing, etc. Is there an easier way or do you just have to go through this ordeal every once in awhile? Any suggestions would be apprecitated.
Thanks

Hello ghg,

With the tractor shut off you can usually grip the pto shaft on the tractor and turn it to help align the splines.

Bless you Kioti. I will give it a shot next time I switch implements.

Kioti is correct. I have a JD950 and I can easily turn the PTO shaft when the engine is off and the PTO disengaged. When I am putting on an implement, I hold the implement PTO shaft to the tractor PTO shaft with one hand while I rotate the tractor PTO shaft with the other hand until it slips on.

Yes, you are required to struggle with your tractor on a periodic basis (varies from state to state) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

Not on my DK 35. There is no way I can turn that shaft and my neighbor has a Kubota 2900 and that one does not turn by hand.bcs

I can grip the pto shaft on my DK35 and it will turn, not real easy, but doable.

I believe you will find that if your PTO selector has the rear PTO selected (ie either rear only or the mid/rear combo), it will not turn by hand whether the engine is on or off. However, it will turn by hand if you select midPTO only. With midPTO selected and engaged, and the engine on, the rear PTO may turn "in sympathy", but will stop if you put your hand on it. It will start slowly turning again once you release it, making it difficult to attach a shaft to.

Obvious safety and ease of installation factors dictate having the engine off and PTO disengaged when trying to align PTO splines. The main point is, in order to manually turn the PTO on your 955, you must deselect it first.

In fact, you Kioti guys might be able to turn your PTO shafts by hand if there is some way to deselect. There is only minor resistance turning on my tractor.

Reality check: While it's interesting to know if or when you can manually turn the tractors PTO, I never try. Only a very minor turn of the implement shaft is all that's ever needed for alignment. With the relatively small implements used on my 24hp tractor, that is not typically a problem for me to do. I don't think about whether or not the PTO I'm working on is selected, and just work on turning the implement shaft. Just my habit I guess.

I thought you were talking about something different here.. but this may fit in this thread.

When I ran my recent generator test (aka the great ice storm of '03) I thought my PTO generator seemed to be vibrating a bit more than was ideal. I eventually put an 8' 2x4 underneath it and shifted it over so it was aligned directly behind the tractor.. no angle at all in the PTO shaft. Vibration gone now.

You guys mind if I run another test soon? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

ghg,

I have an 855 and what I've found to work the best for me is to put the PTO selector to the Mid PTO and this allows me to turn the rear PTO shaft VERY easily. On smaller implements it's often easier to turn the implement shaft but with my Rear Finish Mower (RFM) I have found that the three blades make turning it's shaft much more difficult so I simply select the mid-pto and viola.
