How do you tell if the PTO brake is bad or working correctly? My warranty will be up 3/07 and I've wondered if the brake has been bad for a while, but wasn't sure how to check it. The only thing, so far, I've connected that used to the PTO was my bushhog (BH 306). If I disengage the PTO and let it free spin till it stops it takes 4-5 minutes. I don't expect it to stop immediately, but it seems it should stop quicker than that. The only thing I have it to compare to is our old Ford 3600 which don't have a break and acts the same way. If it needs repaired I need to get it fixed before spring.

Thanks

I have a TN70A, when I disengage the PTO, it takes about 30-60 seconds for the rotray cutter to stop.

TN series tractors have a dry disc PTO clutch and have no PTO brake. I worked on most configurations of TN's from their introduction until a year ago and attended at least 3 service schools on TN's and TNF tractors. I haven't seen it all, just my share.

Wow... dry disc pto clutch.. are they still independnet?.. or is it a 2-stage clutch setup.

I'm pretty sure my 7610s has a wet pto clutch.. and am sure it has a brake...

I wonder why the differences on the larger tractors?

TN's have a double clutch setup. Not really two-stage, because the elements have separate release bearings, fingers and controls. Both discs are contained in a typical double clutch pressure plate assembly. PowerShuttle TN's use the same setup with a torque limiting disc instead of the traction clutch. Ford engineering typically used a wet, multiple disc PTO clutch after 1965. The TN series is Fiat derived where dry disc PTO's are more the norm. FWIW, your 7610S is a bigger unit (HP-wise) than all but the largest TN's.

Rick, this "fell" out of the end of my TN70A lower lift as as I was changing the fluid, is it a "finger"?

Wow.. that'd worry me a bit... looks like a pin made for a retainer clip/e-clip/circlip.. etc.

Probably from the 3PT internal linkage. Most likely the draft control; as if it were from the position control linkage, you would have lost all or part of your hitch function. Purely speculation, however.

Bob if parts are going to continue falling off that TN you may want to go to Harbor Freight and get you one of them big long magnets to drag behind the tractor. It'll catch all the lost stuff for recycling. ;)
