Yesterday was the first time I had need to use the rear PTO. The Operators Manual is pretty vague saying "Remove PTO cap..." so I figured it can't be an unusual technique and the cap should just pull off as it does on my other PTO shafts or a trailer hitch ball. Nope, it wouldn't budge by hand. So I put Channellock pliers on the cap figuring I could twist it off. Nope, the cap didn't budge but I did notice black paint flaking off the cap. I ended up cutting the PTO cap off with a utility knife and nippers. It was only then when I pried the base of the cap out of the steel casting surrounding the shaft that I discovered that the PTO cap is threaded into the steel casting. That would have been nice to know before I started two hours ago. If only the Operators Manual had said "Unscrew and remove PTO cap...." That would have given me a clue, though that may have not worked because it seems that this rear PTO assembly is spray painted black after the cap is on the shaft and it appears that the paint seeped into the threads and kept it from unscrewing. Anyway I hope this post helps a future tractor owner. I'm going to contact Summit support and see if they will send me a new PTO cap.
