Yes, your right it is 13kw on LP without the kit maybe the 12kw figure was for NG.

My friend was a supervisor for the local utility company so he will get to do his install and mine( I'll assist). In exchange I go get the generators with my F350 and move em' around with the tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The upgrade kit is free and includes shipping so I would get it anyway and see if it's an easy install. I f so I'd throw it on, otherwise keep it for when/if your power needs grow.

I just finished updating my back up power to an auto transfer switched 85KW propane generator. Commercial poultry farmers like myself could loose thousands of birds in less than 30 minutes in the summer if the power to the barns is out. Dairy farmers may be able to get away with PTO sets but I wouldn't use one for my application. For poultry barns the industry standard is 25Kw per barn assuming a barn 40'*450' barn.

Now I have an extra old 75kw gas genset that my wife wanted to hook up to the house. I told her it would be cheaper to put in a small stand alone generator than to hook that big old thing and keep it up. The new generator would run the house also with no problem but the house is 400' from the generator so there again it would be cheaper to buy a small stand alone system for the house that redo the main electrical feeds.

As hot as it's been, you could roast those broilers right in the barn if your ventilation fans quit /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

How do you intend to remove the genset from the shipping skid and place it where you want it? You can't lift it by the lid but I notice it has holes in each of the corners. Put a pipe through them maybe? and have four guys lift it?

When he stopped sawing, the generator went to idle. When he started sawing, the generator fired up to high RPMs. I've never seen a generator like that before and it was just plain neat. Unfortunately, I didn't get close enough to see the make or model

Thanks to all who answered my questions. I appreciate it. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hadn't really though of that or looked at it. Maybe place it with the tractor and rip the box and packing away around it carefully by hand or with crowbars if there's wood. What about using 4 hooks in each corner hole and the FEL? I have 4 rachet tie-downs w/ small hooks, I could take those straps and rig something to the FEL? Suppose the poles could also work in conjunction with straps.

Just thinking out loud I really hadn't though about this yet. I though I MIGHT have seen a lift point on top of the motor????? I could be thinking of the generator we returnd though.

Since you have looked at it is any of what I said feasible? Getting four volunteers is always a pain, everyone gets bad backs all of a sudden. Usually the biggest guys vanish /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif It goes like this, "Hey I can bench press 350- 5 times", "Great can you help me move this fridge?" "Sorry I am sore from workin' out" /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

F350 Lawman:

I looked hard at lifting it and since I had no help, I put 2-3/4" iron pipes through the lift holes in the base (they go all the way through) and used 2 chains with hooks on each end to make slings. I put them over the FEL and lifted the gen set into the air. Then I unbloted the skid from the pre-formed base. Then I positioned the gen set on the base that I made up from pressure treated 4x4's, filled with pea gravel and set the gen set. The guy who owns the propane dealer that I deal with told me to set the gen set on a base made of 4x4's filled with pea gravel and he has one too, so that's what I did.

The HST on the 5030 in low range made it easy to position the gen set. At an idle in L, the tractor really moves slowly making close positioning easy.

Here is another picture of the unit on the base. If you look, the feed for the propane into the house is right behind the unit. There is al "L" in the house right here and the utility room is right behind the unit too. Couldn't have worked out better.

Now I have to get a battery, ground rod and do the physical install so the electrician's bill won't be too devistating!!!

That really looks like a nice little unit. You will be the envy of all your neighbors come next power outage.

Also in response to your comments about boiling chickens. 25k chickens, like are in a typical barn, produce 700,000 btu of heat when they are full grown. It's amazing to see how fast those barn heat up when the fans go off.

I also the house on the next lot, about 1000 feet away. I have a 20 amp outlet next to the breeding barn over there to power tank heaters in the winter. At least my renter will be able to keep her fridge cold when the power is out.

Too bad you can't harness that heat for you personal needs. I thought about running plastic pipe through the manure pile to heat my shop in the winter!!
