given the recent blackout of the midwest/northeast /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif ....any comments from anyone using PTO generator with their compact tractor?

When I was generator shopping I strongly considered getting the pto one. Cost was the same as a stand alone but would have had 13kw instead of the 8kw I bought. Only reason I didn't go with the PTO was if I had an outage in the winter I didn't want to have to disconnect the generator in order to plow and figured it would be cheaper putting hours on a generator than on the tractor. I think they're a great option though and all the farmers I know use them.

Power generation is a life and death matter to a chicken farmer such as myself. I once heard of a chicken farmer who got a pto generator for cheap and used that as his power back up. He lived at the end of a country road and was the last priority when they had a power failure. This farmer had to run his tractor solid for a week before he got his power back. Thats a lot of hours to rack up on your tractor.
Of course most needs are not as great. You could run it for a few hours every day and get by but gerald is right that a small stationary unit is probably better unless you need a pto generator for some other reason.
I know on my 85Kw generator it runs at a constant RPM so I would think these pto generators would need a constant 540 pto speed. If this is true thats pretty fast and a lot more noise than a small generator would make.

Hope you don't mind me answering, as I do not use a PTO generator. I considered a PTO generator, but went with a stand alone unit because usually, around here, if there is a power outage there are also trees down, or heavy ice and snow. I figured I would need the tractor and would have to shut down power to the house to use it.
As for stand alone generators, we were at a state park earlier this week and a gentleman was working to repair a wooden bridge that was damaged by a falling tree. He was using a generator and a circular saw. When he stopped sawing, the generator went to idle. When he started sawing, the generator fired up to high RPMs. I've never seen a generator like that before and it was just plain neat. Unfortunately, I didn't get close enough to see the make or model /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

David, I've only seen a generator like that in use once and it was a Honda and it was over 20 years ago. It was a construction crew building the new office building that I was project manager on and I was surprised to see a generator like that myself. The foreman told me they had tried lots of other portable generators and that Honda was the best they'd ever had.

Many of the better generators work like that. They usually have a small car battery for startup, hourmeter and it also controls that idle feature. Without the battery the generator will run with the pull start but you lose the idle-up/idle down feature and hourmeter

I believe that all of the Generac brand models that are rated for 7500 continuous watts or higher have this idle down feature. Mine is a Generac Wheelhouse 5500 continuous and I've considered upgrading to 7500 continuos just to get this feature. I've talked the wife into many things, but I'm not winning on this one /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif She knows I've calculated all the startup loads and we don't need the extra capacity /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Guess I shared too much information /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
By the way...Generac is owned by Briggs and Stratton or vice versa. So, don't look for engine options other than Briggs on Generac models.

I bought a Coleman commercial unit last year. 14,000 surge, 12000 continuos. It idels up/down depending on no load or a load.
Just got my power back this morning. I was going towards a PTO generator but reading this and having my wife home alone if im not,I'll go towards the stand alone type.Now just have to find a good price on one with Min. 5500watt.
Lost power in April for 5 days and i said to myself im getting one,Looked around and thats it,now this!!! I'll be getting one right away NOW /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
