My Massey [1433v] has a lever on the back of the tractor, this lever engages the pto if i turn it off the pto spins either way freely.

Also for me, my stump grinder is a pain to hook up, so i align the tractor and stay about 1 1/2' back then i connect the pto shaft then the stump grinder.

There's no semi-conscious about it. I am fully conscious of my disdain for this task.

My trick is to keep it greased and curse at it like a wounded sailor.

Funniest thing I've read all day!

I keep a couple pairs of surgical gloves in the cab. That way when I'm done attaching the pto shaft I can just remove the gloves and not have to go wash up.

I let my wife do it! When we had the rear mower.

The PTO shaft also should have a grease zerk. Be sure to keep it greased with a synthetic (for cold areas) grease so it will extend and retract easy.

The other thing is to just do it more. The first 50 times were a chore, the next 50 a bit less and after that not too bad!

With the pto disengaged, my pto shaft turns by hand. So, it's not quite the chore of other machines. I think repetition helps also. As far as the coaxial parallelism, well I don't know. I generally am just hooking up a bushhog or disc and not doing trigonometry.:)

The only problem I seem to have is that with my wood chipper, there is only one position where I can connect the PTO shaft.

I have taken a file to both the spline and the implement attachment, but it still only works in one position.

I haven't had the snowblower long enough to know if this problem is unique to the chipper, but I have never had this happen on other tractors.

Every time I change implements, I can see why folks often use the Pat's or some other system to make this an easier chore. I find that getting the draw pins and 3PH properly aligned is a huge PITA, which makes the PTO issue seem like just a minor inconvenience.

My solution is that I try not to make too many such changes.

Don't tell anybody, but I cut the shroud portion off the protector sleeve because of this problem.

Made a world of difference in hooking it up. And it's still protected by the tractor metal shield.

I use a tire iron slipped thru the u-joint to help extend the shaft and turn it if needed. i use the pto shaft cover tie chain to suspend the shaft at about pto level anyway so I don't have to hold it up.. bunji cords are great for holding toplinks and shields out of your way..

Hello All,

Whenever its time to put on the rotary cutter, I find myself semiconsciously dreading the PTO shaft hookup. Not so much locking the shaft on, but getting the splines aligned is the trick. Its a combination of things- no good place to stand; ducking the top link while sidestepping the bottom link; needing both hands to extend the shaft while needing a third hand to rotate the stub spline; or difficulty rotating the shaft while trying to extend it- all these things complicated by protective shrouds on both the tractor and on the PTO shaft that reduce the ability to get a good grip.

To the tractor designers- I'd gladly trade my factory cup holder and cruise control for a better hookup system. Does anyone else have this problem?
