When my tractor (YM 2310D) is running, the PTO will turn/rotate, sort of free-wheeling. I can grab it with my hand and stop it from turning, but when I release it, it begins to turn/rotate again. Is there a fix or explanation for this?

My YM1700 did the same thing, although I never grabbed it while the tractor was running. I did stop it from turning with a board, thats how Iknow it would quit turning.

I think the oil moving around the shaft inside the housing provides enough torque to make it turn and that is why you were able (luckily) to stop it with your hand.

PLEASE do not attempt to stop ANY moving mechanical drive part on your tractor with your hand...it is a good way to lose the use of your hand, wrist, elbow, arm, shoulder, life, etc...

If it doesn't stop, all you gotta do is turn loose of it, no problem. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
I suspect if you jacked up both sides of your rearwheel drive, standard shift car and started the engine in neutral, you would get some movement to the driveshaft and at least one wheel.

There is a spring type brake in the pto assembly that should stop the pto from turning. To fix it the pto assembly & hydraulic lift housing need to be removed.
